Hey everyone. I am going to Cancun for a week in November and want to catch my Philadelphia Eagles play the Packers on the Sunday I arrive. I subscribe to YouTube TV and would stream though my laptop but I am sure that’s a tad bit “out of market”.
On top of that I would like to stream Netflix or Hulu at night.
Can I use a VPN to put me in my region to watch the Eagles game? Would that work for that as well as accessing US based Netflix and Hulu options? Never used a VPN before so any help would be great, thanks.
What about setting up a VPN gateway at home, and connect to that server?
This can be done fairly simple with the OpenVPN Cloud, where you more easily avoid various blocked incoming connections directly to your home IP address. When connected, all your Internet traffic will look like your browsing from your home ISP.
OpenVPN Cloud has a free tier allowing 3 simultaneous connections at the same time. The VPN gateway at home would consume one connection. So you can have two more devices connected when being on the road.
I set this up for my dad so he could watch the birds from Florida. Commercial VPN might work, but might get blocked too. Only way to be certain is to run a VPN server from your home internet.
Easiest way to do that is to run an OpenVPN server on your router if your router supports it. If your current router doesn’t support running an OpenVPN server, probably a good excuse to upgrade.
After the OpenVPN server is up and running, install the OpenVPN app on the device you want to watch on. If you want to watch on a device you can’t install the OpenVPN app on, like maybe a smart tv, you’ll need a travel router.
I actually went to Cancun last month and used a VPN to watch the NBA Finals on Hulu. You just need to switch your location. Very easy
Yeah VPN should fix your problems
Yes it would help. Get a top level VPN and watch your game. They all have 30 day money back guarantees so in the end you wouldnt even lose any money. They just have a simple app that can connect you with few clicks - no need for manual configurations and all that.
Bonus tip - before buying ask VPN providers live chat if they work with that particular streaming service where you would watch the game ( they usually check it for you so you dont buy something that doesnt work, since live streaming can be a bit trickier compared to simple netflix, hulu, amazon prime and etc.)
IIRC YTTV doesn’t just do only IP checks but requires you to allow location check on your browser. I used to watch YTTV in China when traveling for work but it stopped working by 2019. Then again I haven’t traveled for work for a while since the pandemic so I can’t vouch for if this is still a problem.
