Best device to run VPN server for home network access

Hi everyone

What is this subs recommendation on the best device to use for VPN gateway in my home network? Currently have a Raspberry Pi running PiVPN but would with PiVPN no longer being supported, I want a more permanent solution as I am worried the VPN will suddenly stop working or the Raspberry Pi will fail.

Ideally, I want to be able to access all devices on my home network. This would include PCs, printers and IP cameras. I also should add that I am overseas and this device would be installed on my parents home network.

Thanks in advance!

It’s easy to use OpenVPN on Raspbian. Instructions (includes Pi-hole, which I also highly recommend):

I installed wireguard alongside pivpn, and I liked it so much I uninstalled pivpn. It’s my current VPN solution, mostly used from my iPhone & iPad when away from home.

If you have a server and a Docker environment, you can get a Wireguard container up in minutes.

Asus router that supports Asus merlin. You’ll have OpenVPN up and running in 15 minutes.

I use VirtualBox with a VM with a Bridged Network Adapter running OpenVPN. You don’t need a separate device.

Source for no more pivpn support

Thanks heaps for the link. I will check it out

Did you install it from source?

Oh that is interesting. May i ask why you prefer it? Also would I need to setup wireguard on all devices on the home network (eg IP cameras, wireless printers) or would I be able to configure the server to let me access these device from an external network?

That does look impressive. Wonder where I could buy one locally. Have you used one yourself?

Yeah I am worried that the Raspberry Pi might fail or the SD card would fail.

I will look into Synology NAS. I am in New Zealand and the home network is in Ireland so it is not possible for me to pop over if something happens the Pi.

Will wireguard allow me to access things on the network such as IP cameras?
Would the server need to be in the local network?

Something with a cortex A53 or B53 chip.

Sounds good! Sadly at the moment our router is provided by ISP and we don’t have access to admin settings.

Could I place another router inside the network and make it work or would having 2 routers cause issues?

Would require that the VirtualBox server be powered on all the time? An alternative would be a fanless PC with 2 NIC ports running Opnsense/pfSense?

Is there a tutorial on how to set this up?

I have thought about that! Only issue is there is not any laptop/PC that is always running on the home network. Would need to get such a machine.

I have been using a Pi but I am worried about it or the SD card failing

PiVPN isn’t being supported anymore
