Quick question. Bill C11 is essentially censorship for the entire country of Canada. My question is simply, has another country done such an act and would a VPN (using let’s say, an American IP address) negate such censorship from within Canada?
You can take lessons from the people using darknets like Tor and I2P: use a hardened web browser. At least turn OFF javascript and forward the DNS queries through your VPN.
Most Youtube channels that are big have moved to the USA. This law is pretty much a first of its kind for a 1st world country. But Canada has Rodgers Sha Media ect… and they have a lot of power over Canada. It is really about money and power… the new tech has been destorying old Canadian media and this regulation is meant to save old media in Canada.
Because spotify has to recommend more Canadian music if you live Canada is not censorship. Algorithm has to recommend more Canadian content you dont have to watch or listen to it.
Where are you getting your news to conclude that C11 is “essentially censorship for the entire country of Canada”?
I suggest you turn off Rebel News and actually go read C11. Is it a bit of a steamer? Yeah. But calling it “essentially censorship” is also a steamer and makes it evident you’re just running with nonsensical stuff you’ve found online that fits an argument, even if it’s not based in fact. Or reality.
Yes, you’ve probably heard of ‘the Great Firewall of China.’ Other communist countries that rank very low on objective measures of digital freedom - e.g. North Korea, Vietnam, and Russia - have done the same.
I’m not sure what the situation is like in Cuba. It could be that the internet is so unaffordable to most people that the Cuban government has been unconcerned with going to the trouble and expense of censoring its internet.
Console gamer here, if I bought my first laptop ever, set up a new internet plan unassociated to me do I still need to take precautions? I don’t do online banking, shopping or any of that
Oh I understand. That’s a big part of the pitch. The issue is that “legacy” media in Canada is almost entirely federally funded media or content that depicts what the federal government considers to be “representative of Canadian values”.
It will be misused and abused. I think the best comparison is how twitter was used in a way that benefited one political party and not the other prior to Elon taking over.
That’s what our whole internet will look like. It’s pretty sad. It’s going to be abused and misused especially during elections.
Probably shouldn’t respond until you actually read it and comprehend it.
It regulates ALL audio and visual content - including social media websites, search engines and so fourth and has the right to block said websites for non compliance across all Canadian ISPs.
I don’t really see how they can actually enforce the law without resorting to censorship, but I guess time will tell. VPN sales will surely be up and with good reason here in Canada.
