Bitdefender or Malwarebytes?

Title says it all. I recently made the mistake of paying for and downloading mcafee (i like to browse on the Tor network now and again sometimes on sketchy Onion addresses so I felt like I should have some extra protection) and after realizing they were going to send me an add via popup everytime i opened the desktop I got a refund and uninstalled it.

I replaced it with malwarebytes and have the free trail of premium. I like it well enough but it is taking up quite a bit of system resources. Ive been hearing more and more good things about bitdefender. I have a couple questions for the community.

A) If yall had to pick between the two which would you go for?

B) Would you pay for the premium if you were in my situation or is the free version good enough?

C) Do you have any suggestions for better protection while crawling the dark web? Which VPN would you use, free or paid?

A): Bitdefender is significantly better at protection than Malwarebytes and multiple testing labs all confirm this. Malwarebytes rarely if ever submits itself to testing and when it does on rare occasions it mediocre.

B): If you’re going to be browsing the dark web you need to be paying for every protection module you can get. Bitdefender’s Free includes ransomware protection but only the paid version contains a ransomware rollback module. They also give you an anti tracking browser extension too but meant for the normal web, not the dark web.

C): Probably better subreddits to figure out the best VPN for those types of sites. NordVPN, ProtonVPN, Mullvad VPN, etc that have zero logging is what you should look for along with if they natively support Tor/Onion. NordVPN does but I’m sure many others do too.

bitdefender eats my cpu and memory up like a bitch

Bitdefender comes with more bloat but it has stronger protection.

I purchased Bitdefender Antivus about 8 months ago. I couldn’t get to install it properly on my computer. I tried again for some time but it still wouldn’t install, so I started using Windows defender and it has my needs with no negative effects on my computer.

Bitdefender, Malwarebytes isn’t bad but it’s not a great standalone Antivirus

Bitdefender has better real time protection than Malwarebytes and Bitdefender Internet security comes with its own firewall where as antivirus plus and free just use the built in Windows firewall Malwarebytes premium also just uses the Windows firewall

how much did bitdefender pay you to make this comment lol, bitdefender fanboys try to justify their “significantly better and superior” AV eat up half of their cpu and memory “B-But it has ransomware rollbakcvhk!!!11!11!!!”

thanks a ton for the quick and informative response mate! Going to switch to bitdefender

And yet AV comparatives says it has one of the lowest impacts of any AV software.

Did you contact technical support? This shouldn’t be the case.

What would you recommend then?

Will built in WDefender act just equal as Bitdefender?

I did with the original subscription, but they just tried to sell me a VPN and a security suite. After it expired I bought a new subscription for just antivirus and it works great!

I think they were recommending Bitdefender (at least over Malwarebytes).

I used Windows Defender for years and I never had any problems with it. I switched to Bitdefender recently because I wanted to try out the highest rated antivirus. I rarely go on any risky websites or use any suspicious browsers. I also used Malwarebytes Premium for a while until I read about its lack of effectiveness. WD is fine for personal use imo. I’m not an expert but I’ve been using Windows since XP came out.

I’m going to go with no. It uses less than 1% on any of the several hundred computers I have it deployed on, on my network. If it’s using that much there’s something wrong with your computer

It’s using 2.6% for me right now. I just installed it.

If you just installed it, it’s likely doing a background scan actively. Mine isles at 0.1-0.2%. I have it installed on a few hundref computers
