Can school network trace me?

Hey guys, so basically I just learned about VPN and all that great stuff.

Now, I’m no big computer guy, so I really don’t know what I am talking about, so I need some help here.

After looking around at VPN services I finally decided to go with PrivateInternetAccess.com because it fits my budget. All I am looking to do is get around the blocked webpages that are on the school network and in the dorm rooms (they are HEAVILY censored). So far its been working perfectly, I’ve gotten around all of them!

My question is though, will they be able to know its me? can they trace the VPN back to my computer? How secure is it? Can they hack it or something to find me?

Yes. Schools are a horrible place to torrent. They monitor packets that come in and out of their network. They have ways of tracing your computer

Honestly they won’t be able to see what you are doing. Unless it’s a school PC. Then they most likely have some kind of monitoring software on it. If it’s your own PC then they will only know that you’re connecting to a VPN because all your traffic will be going to one IP address. They won’t be able to see what you’re doing because all traffic to and from your PC will be encrypted.

Just make sure you use the Kill Switch and DNS leak protection because you don’t want your porn sites to leak.

At least at my school, they have keyloggers and mouse tracking, and they can see your screen remotely. I don’t know if it’s the same there, but I wouldn’t doubt it.

Try ZenMate, its a VPN addon for chrome and its Free. Go incognito and connect to ZenMate it should let you do whatever you want.

If you are using your school internet then yep there is a possibility to trace you that you are using some sort of proxy or VPN… Paid VPN are more secure then free and no chance to get hacked by others…

torrent? As in download music and stuff? Or maybe I am understanding you wrong. If I am understanding you right though, I wont be using it to torrent, but to access porn… sorry for the blatant honesty

The point of the VPN is that it encrypts traffic before it leaves your computer so that no intermediaries know what you’re looking at. If he’s connected to the VPN then his school doesn’t know what his traffic looks like. They will see that all his traffic is being routed through a VPN (or at least they’ll see it’s all going to one place and can guess that one place is a VPN). However, they won’t know what you’re doing.

ok, I understand that. Yes, I am using my own computer. So then they will be able to see that it is my computer using the VPN. From that they will be able to find me, although they wont have any idea what I was doing right?

Sorry. I didn’t see you mention porn in your original post. I don’t they care if you watch porn. You shouldn’t need a VPN to watch porn on a college campus.

No, you are totally secured. Make sure you browse using incognito and don’t leave trace of history. All they see is connection being made to an ip with port logs. Enjoy :wink:

Oh, I didn’t see that it was your laptop. In that case they would have to download it to it, but they most likely do monitor network traffic.

I go to a school where we work online, but go to a building with teachers. They run LightSpeed security and during the day the building is used as the Alternative School for the area.

Wait up. Looks like you’re at one of the LDS schools. You don’t have to login to each individual session, but the network is set to automatically sign you in with your net ID once you’ve verified a device is your own on the BYU secure networks. So it does require login even though it’s done automatically.

At least that’s how Provo does it.
