Looking for the best option to take with me whereby I can configure it at home to duplicate my home wifi basestation name, take to a hotel, easily configure to connect to their wifi and then my devices to automatically connect to it like they’re at home, but securely via Proton VPN.
GL-Inet slate or beryl ( I have both) are easy to configure for Wireguard or OpenVPN as long as you have an account where you can create a wg0.conf or a XXX.opvn config file.
You can even have a kill switch for the router itself.
Another vote for slate. And you say you are not bothered by connecting back home, but I also use a flint at home, and instead of using proton - which many people can detect - I vpn it back home so all traffic appears to be coming from home. Great for watching HBO, netflix etc from abroad. Also makes it so your banking/travel web sites etc don’t prompt you for additional logins.
Please let me ask this, if I already have a VPN running in my computer, why would I need to have a router which has a VPN, I understand redundant, but is it really needed? is it enough with the one running in your device?
The Muama Ryoko portable Wi-Fi device has received mixed reviews, with some users alleging fraudulent practices. Several customers have reported issues such as unauthorized charges, difficulties in canceling orders, and misleading advertising about the product’s features and costs
If you run the VPN on the router, instead of the PC or phone, all devices will be under VPN. Smart watch, smart toaster, everything on the network, with only one management center.
This is ideal if you want VPN traffic on machines that don’t have an app
Yeah, doesn’t have to be anything particularly fast, just maximum YouTube watching. Wasn’t sure if the little box which I think has been around 5+ years would have the horsepower to do it?
I have used GL.iNet SFT1200 (Opal), it’s only about $35, most basic model. It works great with Proton and no issues with basic browsing or Youtube watching on 1-2 devices at a time. Just don’t expect high speeds for that price, specs max speed over Wireguard 65Mbit and OpenVPN 12Mbit, and you’ll be lucky to get maybe 80% of that in real applications.
If you want higher speeds or more devices, there are higher end GL.iNet models but they’ll be around $100. Whatever model you get make sure to upgrade firmware first to the latest.
