Xfinity works fine with no VPN. Turn the VPN on and it crawls and intermittently fails to “no internet”.
Googling says to “disable xfi advanced security”, but I can’t find that in my online account info, nor on the app.

Hello, u/icepick_. I can imagine how frustrating a VPN must be to use if your connection becomes intermittent. If you’d like to try disabling xFi Advanced Security, you can find the steps here Use Xfinity xFi Advanced Security - Xfinity Support. Advanced Security will only be available if you rent a Xfinity Gateway.
I see no “Advanced Security” on the Security tab. Only a Two-step verification option, and the privacy center.
I believe I’m using my own equipment, but I’d have to double check that.
Other ideas?
You using your own equipment could be why. When you can please check that out and let me know what you find. It does sound like some modem settings need to be adjusted though. That or you need to use a different/faster VPN protocol.
It’s not. It’s a Motorola MB8611.
I’d reach out to your VPN to see if there are any known issues. Since it’s not our modem there isn’t much we can do, especially since when you turn the VPN off the internet is back to normal.
My follow up post was deleted. Posting here.
I’m still having issues ONLY when I’m connected to my work’s Anyconnect VPN. Service works fine otherwise. Since that last post, I’ve gotten an official Xfi Gateway. My issue remains.
After connecting to the VPN, my service slows dramatically (from of 120 Mbps+ to ~1 or 2 Mbps DL, and 0.2 Mbps UL), works for a minute or so, then dies completely. My Windows laptop will indicate that I’m connected to my WIFI, but have no internet connection.
Any troubleshooting ideas will be welcome.
Hi u/icepick_, Thanks for following up with us. Did you have the opportunity to work with your VPN provider yet? If the slow connection only happens when you’re connected to VPN I would recommend having them check your VPN servers and setting, restarting all your your devices, and possibly reinstalling your VPN software.
Yeah, I’ve tried all of the basic troubleshooting to no avail.
VPN works fine when I’m using work’s WIFI, or my phone’s WIFI. Just not with Xfinity for some reason.
I had an idea, and connected to the gateway wifi directly, instead of through my eero mesh. And that appears to work.
Time to investigate eero issues I guess.
Thanks for letting me know about the troubleshooting steps you have taken. If you own your modem advance security is not eligible for your account which is why you’re not seeing the option for it in your online account. How many devices do you have connected to your network while the VPN is on? Are you connected via Wi-Fi? If so, have you tried bypassing your Wi-Fi and connecting directly to your modem using a Ethernet connection?
While we don’t provide technical support for third-party VPNs, I am wondering if your firewall settings are where they need to be as they can cause slower speeds with VPN as well.
I’m happy to hear it’s working for you now. Here is a link with more information on connecting through a VPN Use Virtual Private Network (VPN) with your Xfinity Internet service - Xfinity Support.
