Title says it all. I’m still utilizing kaspersky, a USA user who bought a license from Amazon (3 Year, 10 Devices). Kaspersky wouldn’t update. When I changed my location via vpn to lets say Canada or UK for example, it updated and now i’m up-to-date. I’ll keep an eye though how much longer I can keep going lol…
Just wanted to share my experience with others that may come across something like this as well.
Trick for now: Using my normal VPN to outside the USA works fine for updates. Obviously taking your computer out of the USA for real also works.
BUT ALSO the internal free built-into-the program Kaspersky VPN (EVEN if the direct VPN site it says it connects to is in the USA) also seems to currently work for Kaspersky definition updates (I guess there may be some non-US component to Kaspersky’s own VPN).
I’ve used Kaspersky successfully on multiple devices for more than a decade and have always liked it. Back in the days on Norton and McAfee, Kaspersky stood ahead of the crowd. I live in the U.S and was aghast and disappointed at the U.S. Government’s policy to ban Kaspersky. Reddit forums on this subject seem to buy into the propaganda that everything Russian must be bad. Amid the universal scorn for Kaspersky online, many say that Windows Defender is all one now needs. Is this true?
Today, I realized that I am unable to update Kaspersky. Seems like I have two options: get a VPN in order to continue with Kaspersky or just go with Windows Defender. Wondering what people think? What setting would I have to change on Defender if I delete Kaspersky?
Was this on desktop or mobile phone?
Hey I added the update source servers from here manually, and it works without a VPN. I only added the HTTPS servers from here.
Official Kaspersky database update servers list: https://support.kaspersky.com/us/common/start/6105
I should add that after updating Kaspersky, i’ve turned off the vpn. I’ll update if I can’t update again, but it seems to be staying up to date so far after that major update earlier.
I could never get kaspersky to run a complete FULL SCAN. I’ve been going back and forth with them for a year, with no resolution. I think they were just toying with me, knowing they were going to be banned in the US and they took my money anyway. They kept having me do pretty much the same things over and over again. At one point, they acknowledge that there was a bug, but then as soon as it was officially banned, they said there’s nothing they can do, then I got that stupid UltraAV. Got rid of that as soon as it was installed. Didn’t have anything that I paid for in the kaspersky program. Now they want to close my trouble ticket, I keep telling them no, as it was never fixed…
Where did you buy your Kaspersky activation codes?
You can also add update servers from different regions to the updater segment of kaspersky without a VPN. I did this and it works great again. If you’re running Kaspersky Premium, follow these steps:
Pick a server from the official list here from different regions: https://support.kaspersky.com/us/common/start/6105
Go to Security > Look at Anti-Virus Database Update Panel > Cogwheel (settings) icon > Select Update Sources > Add > Paste URL into Path textbox > Save
You can make the vanilla config last priority by moving it down.
Desktop. I can confirm on 2 devices so far. Got it installed on my workstation and laptop. I do have Kaspersky on Android, but since Google removed Kaspersky, wonder how that’s going to update now.
Would you mind detailing the exact steps needed to do this? I made it as far as getting to the window where you can update the sources. I tried saving the servers in the link you posted into a text file and added that as a source but the update still fails, so I am not sure that I did it correctly.
Which of the servers are you able to use? I just tried this (added the first few to the list) and it still doesn’t work for me.
So update once over vpn, then normal updates work without any vpn?
Amazon 3 year. About 6 months ago. Was cheaper than renewing on Kaspersky and probably an international license.
I set my fallback Kaspersy site Def update to Mexico city. So that may help too. See my post history for how to do that.
Unfortunately it doesnt work anymore
Edit: It does ineed work with VPN but ONLY if you set updates to manual.
Can confirm that updating the links didnt work for me today. I used Kaspersky VPN switched it to canada and updated my databases on Desktop. On my Android phone using kaspersky VPN isnt working so i used another third party VPN to update the databases
Desktop and Android have updated without a problem for me so far, without using a VPN. Activation code I had until 10/7 was bought from Amazon. I’m using one bought from Newegg now, with no change.
Your on Android - duh, it’s not an iPhone. U don’t have to install from the Google play store, just install an apk or something, again - it’s an Android.
Tldr: u can update kaspersky through apks on android
No need to put it in a text file, just paste the link in the path and save. You can make the kaspersky servers that came preconfigured, last priority.
- Clicked on “Database update”
- Then “Schedule: Automatically (Recommended)”
- Then “Select Update Sources”
- Then added the servers from the list, just copy-pasted the URL’s.
I also added some HTTP servers as a failsafe later.
Pictures for illustration.
