Does Opera Browser have built in Free VPN type connection or not?

A VPN type connection used to work within Opera around 2021-2022 or so. Now it’s either fully subscription based, has a tiny freebie period, or is made complex so as to encourage paid product.

What is confusing is that online Opera help from the company suggests it’s Free and available all the time, but a possible download is needed. I already have opera so not sure if download is for the VPN only or the browser which also features the supposed Free Vpn.

I had an up to date install of Opera and it’s VPIN working and re-directing from Europe, but now not, I think the initial free period ended possible.

On a different machine where no VPN has been used, the only thing I’m able to find within Opera is a paid Subscription although I’ve not used the VPN on this since probably the earlier mentioned 2021 period.

Am I missing something very obvious and simple or has Opera VPA gone completely paid despite all the FREE talk?

Well, I found my way to the VPN. What worked was going to the Opera Websie Services>Add Ons link on the Opera site, and scrolling to to find Opera Free VPN

https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/details/opera-vpn/

then (if you are browsing from Opera) there is a link to ‘Enable in Opera’

Which magically turn on the VPN again

Yes, Opera has a free VPN. You can enable it in settings page.

In my opinion they are making it not as easy to turn on as before, so you are led down the path of their subscription based VPN. For me is was not just clicking it on in the advance settings, I needed to follow the above steps in order to get it on and working.

This did not age well…

It hase been described as closer to encryption more than a true vpn. That’s what happens when you try to get a free one.

I found a work around, it’s a bit of a hassle but it’s the only way that works to enable and disable the basic VPN. It seems like Opera wants people to pay for their upgraded variant.
