Recently I had issues with my NordVPN connecting, but then killing my internet connection.
The VPN still showed as connected, but the internet was totally dead.
Disconnecting the VPN established the internet connection immediately.
The solution was simple:
- in NordVPN
- goto Settings
- goto Connection
- see VPN Protocol
- change protocol from “Auto” to “TCP”
I also use NordLynx and it works fine: auto seems to generally be the issue.
Hope this helps someone else out there with the same problem!
What sets the Auto protocol option apart from the others is its capability to independently determine the fastest working VPN protocol for your specific case. This means if it detects issues connecting with the NordLynx protocol, it will switch to the next fastest option, such as OpenVPN UDP, and continue trying different options until it finds one that works for you.
The downside is that this can prolong your initial VPN connection time due to the app trying different protocols “under the hood.” To mitigate this, the protocol will remember the last one that worked for you and save it to expedite subsequent connections (and will occasionally double-check to ensure that the saved protocol is still the fastest available to you).
Given this, the issue you described in your post seems quite unusual, as the app “under the hood” uses the same protocols that you can manually select from the VPN protocol dropdown. To better understand what is happening in the application, could you please provide us with the diagnostics from the app?
You guys have all the details in a ticket I sent in (you were the ones who provided me with the solution haha).
This explanation is even greater, for people who Google this issue, as I did last week, and found nothing helpful, given how unusual it seems to be.
Hopefully it’ll help some people in the future.
