Fastest and most convenient VPN

Hey guys! I would like to know what VPN services you are using on Ubuntu and why did you pick exactly that one? I have a fresh Ubuntu installed and I want to setup a fast, secure and easy-to-use VPN. Thanks in advance. :baby:

Wireguard, the connection speed is allot fasther than open vpn in my experience. And when you try to connect to the vpn it is almost instandly connected

I use my own, I got VPS slices at my provider at their 4 locations and set up OpenVPN on each, they also serve for other things as well…from shared hosting for my domains, to various other items I run.

I have the option to use SlickVPN which I get as part of my UseNet sub via newsdemon, I don’t use UseNet much since other sources provide what the binary groups there did, and I never reset my NZB server to bother with it for part of that any more.

I had a IBVPN in the past but StrongVPN purchased them, and I don’t really trust them or slickvpn as they are US based companies… SlickVPN also has issues with port blocks like 22 for SSH, or well really any port, other than a few like 80 443… Strong I’ve not used much since I created my own on my own servers and theses cover what I need…IB was p2p friendly if thats is something you are doing, and I think strong continues that support, but again, I DIY on that stuff.

If you need the VPN just for security for $48/year (1GB KVM based Slice) you can do it yourself… check on BF for some server deals and you likely can do it for less or get more servers…in multiple locations…for that price…LowEndBoxes can help with these deals, but you will need familiarty with Linux admin to do this. I had these boxes mostly for other stuff already and justed added OpenVPN when IBVPN got bought out…I am happy with it to 90%… I have at timesone issue which I can’t seem to solve its a time out issue at times…its got to be a config issue as the commercial ones do not exhibit this issue…Its annoying at times, but again I had these and they work for my needs.

If you need things to fake out DNS to get foreign netcrapx and iplayer etc… then you probably need one of the commercial ones, although I guess if you know the software to mimic that you can DIY… I don’t need that, just want my stuff encrypted over the ISP.

I do use various things like Pluto, Tubi, Xumo etc. on it, all at HD, I never looked at the resolution, but take it is 1080, but it looks as good as any other HD source I play…

Protocol wise I guess the new hotness love infatuation is wireshark, and I don’t know anything about it to be pro or con. Again, happy with what I got to the point I may let StrongVPN go… its $41/yr for the ability to use about 50-60 servers in various places… I’ve really only kept it this year as I forgot to cancel it in time this go around…

A lot will depend on your needs… Do you need multiple servers, need wireshark, need p2p support, possibly need ports open which may not be like 22 for SSH, or VNC, etc… Do you have Linux admin skills to set this up, maintain, (there is a great script which does the install for OpenVPN, as well a creating client profiles, setup of the DNS, server config etc…)

I am happy with my DIY approach.

Mullvad gets a ton of praise on r/privacy, but I wouldn’t really consider it the fastest. If you’re interested in privacy try out Mullvad; they seem like a pretty awesome company

I’m using NordVPN. It connects fast and the speed is very good. I also like the meshnet feature (multiple devices can connect to the same account and behave like they are in the same local network, no matter where they are).

I’m using PrivateVPN for about seven years now. The speed is very good and seldom have disconnections. The windows version has an easy to install program. With Ubuntu it might be a little more difficult, BUT the do offer free installation help via Teamviewer!!!

Once they helped me to install a Kill-Swith on my torrent machine (Linux). Still working like a charm. It is a bit smaller company in Swiss, but the helpdesk guys know were they are talking about!

Thank you for a detailed reply. I don’t have linux admin skills unfortunately, just starting my first steps.

I am curious about why you wouldn’t trust US based companies?

Wireshark is indeed getting a lot of attention, I used it on my Windows machine and it was quite good. I should try on Linux as well.

Thank you! I’ll definitely check it out.

I actually tried NordVPN first thing, but I couldn’t go further after installing. Anything I’d do, at the connect step I would get “You are not logged in” as a response. I tried with 2-3 accounts, same result everytime :frowning: Otherwise I’d stay with Nord.

I am curious about why you wouldn’t trust US based companies?

US firms can be subpoenaed, raided by the DOJ who are corrupt from top to bottom.

Foreign firms especially in the EU, don’t take well to the “We are the FBI…”, matter of fact they don’t like them at all… when they show up… hence why IB was a good one, it was in one of those ex USSR places, that made attempts to get any data from them difficult to pointless

So while they may have no logs, again prove it, and that US LE could show up at their HQ etc is an issue…

I control the servers, I control what can be logged, so, pointless. Its more to have the traffic over the ISP to be encrypted, and to break the various data collected by sites, like this one, and others…you think I am here today, there the next, maybe its here, maybe its there… I could be logged into sites and appear to teleport thousands of miles away! So your data on me is now corrupt. Success.

Its one of many pieces, along with ghostery, adblock, etc…

twitdumpo is whining about ad revenue… suckers… Who see’s ads on their browser??? If you are seeing that crap you are doing it wrong. Ads > dev/null!

Did you do “nordvpn login”? You did right? Cause I’ve never experienced that. And I’ve tried it on Fedora too. Also as a web browser extension.
