Probably a “no duh” post, but this is something people overlook. Using a VPN can help disguise your internet traffic and make it harder to target you. Using private browsers (We use DuckDuck Go here), encrypted messaging apps (Signal is a good one), and turning off your location are also good ideas if you want to be as protected as possible.
Tor is also a great browser to use and becomes very hard to track when used with a VPN.
Sorry if this isn’t allowed, I just want to stress the necessity of cyber security.
Edit : if you have better advice then please feel free to share it so that others can benefit, I know my post is pretty basic. I also know that Russia can and will monitor posts, pictures, videos, messaging, etc to target combatant positions, hvts, and direct artillery strikes, this should not be news.
Edit 2: Also, of course I understand that Ukrainians are not new to the internet. I mean no shit, that’s why this sub exists. I just know that most people practice almost zero security when using the internet or sending messages
DO NOT SHARE ANY INFORMATION ABOUT MOVEMENTS, LOCATION OR IDENTIFICATION OF ANY OF THE UKRAINIAN ARMED FORCES.
DO SHARE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE INFORMATION ABOUT MOVEMENT OF RUSSIAN TROOPS INSIDE RUSSIA, BELARUS AND UKRAINE INCLUDING: LOCATION, IDENTIFICATIONS, MARKINGS, INSIGNIA.
Signal can be read by feds, OS doesn’t matter.
But a private VPN or at least ProtonVPN would be something . Ukraine has a lot of VPN services though . Tor is solid but slow still better than nothing . But if Russia infiltrates ISP , then there’s nothing you can do
Signal can NOT be read by feds. The feds asked them for information and all they had saved was the account creation date and when it was last online. It is open source and funded by a human rights NGO
I’m by no means an expert on this stuff so any advice is appreciated. I’m simply aware that most regular people don’t think twice about cyber security, so any level is an improvement.
Not sure if this is still the case but several years ago we had to stop using WhatsApp because Russia had cracked it.
Dont be a dick. The average person has no idea what a vpn is, what tor is, nor do they realize the full scope of how easy a phone can be tracked. We are getting posts and videos from people that have never needed to really worry abou those things or do you think the 20 something year old posting videos of troops passing through their neighbored to instagram have prepared their security?
Signal messages can’t be decrypted by anyone. The feds gained access to the messages by hacking the phones themselves. The program is open-source and secure, so you can verify the source code yourself.
I’m sure, I mean that whole section of Europe is pretty tech savvy, but I also know that there’s a solid chance the average person not in the tech world isn’t thinking about these things so it all bears repeating. Geo-location gets people killed.
We had a kid in my unit take a picture during an exercise. The cyber warfare guys pulled his image then used it to direct an artillery strike that wiped out his entire command. Luckily that was all training.
