PrivacyTools.io has a relatively weak criteria for recommended VPN’s.

As far as I’m concerned, there are only two VPN providers that I’d consider trustworthy.

  • Mullvad VPN
  • AzireVPN

Edit: to explain further why these two VPN’s are the only ones I find acceptable, I made a list of criteria below.
My criteria:

  • Fully Open Source VPN Client Apps
  • Doesn’t Ask For Any Potentially Identifying Information (No Email, No Phone Number, etc)
  • Supports Anonymous Registration
  • Accepts Cryptocurrency Anonymously
  • Has Extensive Technical Documentation
  • Has No Affiliate Advertising Programs
  • Not Based In A 5 Eyes Country Or In Countries With Oppressive Regimes That Are Known To Suppress Press Freedom & Free Speech.
  • Supports The WireGuard Protocol
  • Supports Bridges To Bypass Censorship
  • Supports Open Source Protocol Obfuscation
  • Works with QubesOS
  • Supports Tor Integration (Using The VPN As An Exit Node)
  • Has An Internet Kill Switch
  • Doesn’t Leak IP or DNS
  • Clear & Concise Privacy Policy & ToS
  • Clear No Logging Policy

You can use OpenVPN with ProtonVPN, and you don’t need Proton Mail. It’s just an option for those signed up already
