Frustrated -- Proton VPN on Mac -- So many problems

First, every time it connected Norton asked for permission. Turned off Noreton firewall and activated Mac Firewall. Problem persisted. Choose IKeV2 – Norton stopped asking. Regardless, I constantly found that my internet connection stopped – tested using Speediest. Only ay was to manually select another ProtonVPN server. Worked for a little while. Always shut down eventually. Can’t rely on it.

Have endured this for a long time. Happy they added a lot more servers in my area – but have to manually select servers because their level of service is completely different despite the loading.

I also have ProtonVPN running on Windows machine – it’s like night and day. Works great. Always solid. Almost seems like twi different products/companies. While I recommend the product for Windows, after enduring this problem for years, I finally have come to the conclusion that Mac users are not the company’s ket market. I think I need to find a VPN that caters to Mac users – any suggestions?

Norton is pretty much spyware and to put it on any device is a bit silly. The problem would most likely be with Norton as I have used proton vpn with no issues whatsoever on many of my macs. I think you may have a bit of a unique situation vs an actual issue with proton vpn on mac

Don’t know if you use Twitter, but Proton VPN stops me using the search function.

You posted the exact same problem a month ago:

https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonVPN/comments/117mv8p/protonvpn_and_norton_360_issues/

And were advised to ditch Norton. You clearly didn’t heed the advice then, so why should anyone waste their time by helping you now?

Hey friends. Sorry if this bothers anyone, I’m just making light and some fun of my situation here and am deciding to use this post as my therapy couch. I just bought and downloaded a month of Mullvad. It’s so fast and responsive that it feels fake. Is this one the one?

Thanks. May I ask what you use on your Mac in place of Norton for malware/antivirus protection?

Would any of yall be able to help me? I’m using Norton VPN on my mac and it keeps disconnecting randomly. Went to apple support for help with settings and got none, they referred me to Norton CS and I can’t find anything but an article telling me to uninstall and reinstall the app. I did, so far it hasn’t dropped and worked but I feel like this is BS. I referred myself to reddit. Any help/tips on VPN use would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: Pretty sure it’s the same problem OP had, so wtf did OP end up doing the comments are a bit unclear here

Yup. I don’t know how people still use that crap. It’s really shocking to me.

Thank you for your courteous response. On the advice of the ProtonVPN folks, who are always prompt and respectful in their responses, I removed both Norton and ProtonVPN and reinstalled them. I waited for some time to do this as I was involved in some work and didn’t want to disrupt things. I have gotten responses that were very negative towards Norton, responses saying I didn’t need anything other than the MacOS, and responses that suggested adding a minimal malware alternative.

Perhaps you believe that the user base of reddit remains the same and that once a question is raised, it should never be raised again. Regardless, I would suggest that if you do not think that you can add to the discussion, please ignore my request.

You see, I was raised in the 20th century, before social media became all the rage, by people who believed that respect and being polite to others were the most important things that they could bestow on their prodigy. It appears that these days, the lessons of social media (e.g., take cheap shots at anyone anytime you can because you will be “liked” when bullying others or putting them down) masquerades as appropriate behavior. Not in my world, thank you.

Again, thank your for taking the time to respond. In the future, when I post something, feel free to simply ignore it. I will, in turn, be happy to ignore your posts, as well. /r

Malwarebytes. The free version works great. Run it once a week or more if needed.

Nothing. I haven’t used anything for close to 5 years now and never got any problems whatsoever.

If I really want to use something, free MalwareBytes, that’s it.

I’ll be honest. I had Norton a long long time ago and all it gave me was headache. Remove it, you don’t need it. Or if you want, download MalwareBytes free. That’s it.

Just don’t go clicking untrusted links or downloading some random file.

I don’t use much other than the OS itself. I also have pretty good opsec as I work in the industry (don’t open links I don’t know, separate networks for different devices/uses/guests,etc). I will occasionally put malwarebytes on my device to run a check but that’s about it. I do also run a Pihole on my network to just keep the junk to a minimum. I absolutely do NOT recommend Norton however, that software is poison.

You don’t need anything else other than the bundled protection (Xprotect) and, at a push, Malwarebytes

Perhaps not the best way to go about it, but they have a point.

Under a post about Norton, right?

Why is Norton so bad??

I understand. I was hoping that someone had discovered a solution. Still, I felt that the reaction was unwarranted and deserved a mature response. Perhaps the fact that one of the things I do is teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels has made me more open to questioning — even those questions that have been asked previously. Somehow I wish that we could return to a time and, in the words of a patriot, return to regular order. /

Bro SOS im literally you rn, why is Norton so bad LOL did you switch to proton? it fucking disconnected again. fml. Fuck you Norton.
