[help] utorrent keeps getting quarantined by my antivirus

I’ve had utorrent installed in my laptop for about three years now and suddenly my antivirus (avira free version) notified me that it had detected suspicious activity and had it quarantined. I clicked details but it didn’t show me anything it just ran the luke filewalker and then opened the main avira window.

I tried to look for utorrent to uninstall it, but it was already gone. I thought maybe it was just a glitch, so I tried downloading a new installer for utorrent but avira caught the installer and quarantined it so it’s gone and I don’t know what to do.

Hello! Maybe a bit late but just saw this thread and wanted to suggest a solution to this. What you’re experiencing is a behavior coming indeed from Avira. At some point they introduced this detection that automatically removes certain things. However, you can disable this and prevent future deletion / quarantine action. There are two settings which result in this behavior:

  1. Security privacy risk
  2. PUA (Short for Potential Unwanted Applications) https://www.avira.com/en/support-threats-summary/7946?track=1

You can find both of these options within Avira by navigating to:

  1. Click “Avira settings” (Gear icon on top right corner of the Avira window). You will then see three tabs in the tree menu on the left hand side of the window. These are General, Security and Privacy
  2. Expand “Security tab”.
  3. Expand “Protection options”.
  4. Click on “Threat categories”.
  5. Uncheck “Security privacy risk” and “Potential Unwanted Applications”

Following these steps will solve what you’re experiencing, and your software will work and not be quarantined nor will whatever you download be removed.

Last but not least Windows Defender also does similar things so in case you need help with that I can show you how to set it up as well.

However you need to be aware of course that you might be subject to certain risks when disabling these options so yeah read more on what they do.

Same problem here with Avira… I was like “why my utorrent is suddenly gone…”

Add the client and installer to exclusions/whitelist.

If you can you also want to move quarantining from automatic to you decide.

This nonsense is happening with a lot of clients now and even other av’s like kaspersky, malwarebytes real time, windows defender…

help Hi I have the paid for version of uTorrent Pro from the playstore but my torrents seem to have fully downloaded but stall at 99 percent with the ETA Keep giving me second’s to complete but moving up and down? is this normal has the torrent completed? any help would be appreciated thanks

Happened to me also. qbittorrent_portable seems to work well. It’s portable so stays in just one directory. I added exclusion to this directory (from within Avira) and hopefully Avira will leave it alone.

Simple solution… (a bit late)

  1. Just find a crappy old antivirus application that takes over the role that lets you have control over what is allowed or not…
  2. Use a second machine (if possible) for downloading, A Linux machine perhaps - where the torrent client can be accessed via a web interface
  3. Know your system and how to disable annoying things.

Happened to me on Avg and Avira

I see! Thank you so much!

Guess that means we will have to move on to another torrenting program sooner or later.

Such a nuisance, I assume companies are doing this for on of two reasons;

  1. Big corporations pushing on antivirus software to by default remove torenting programs and make torrenting more difficult so people give up.

    1. There’s a legitimate issue with people getting lots of virus and malware from torrents.

Personally I think it’s more the first thing since most people who torrent know where to find safe and reliable torrent. So this push is likely coming from the deep pockets above.

How do I do that? I have avast as an antivirus btw

Yeah, I have the same problem :frowning:
