To uninstall Antivirus or Virus do:
Complete clean reinstall
Check that all paid for 3rd Part Apps have transferable license(s) if not STOP!
Do manual backup of your data not TM as TM can bring it back
Make note of all 3rd party products you use and system setting
In recovery mode :
Erase the SSD
Install Mac OS
Recover data from the manual backup
Reset system settings
Install 3rd Party Apps
Create new TM and do a backup
You can always run
Malwarebytes as we do
Good luck
You don’t need an anti-virus app on your Mac. If you really want to install one, install clamAV instead.
Direct answer: if you really want/need Avast, you’re going to have to remove AVG. The same is generally true on Windows PCs; it’s just not smart to have two different always-on anti-virus packages running on your PC, because they tend to slow your PC way down by getting in each others way. Even a single malware scanner will slow things down, for that matter.
Slightly more useful answer: if you actually need antivirus software (say for compliance with a work security mandate, for example) than ask a professional security person for advice on which one to install… but most Mac users can get away without installing third-party products. Naturally you should take into account your Mac’s exposure to risk: there are people out there who target Mac users with malware, even though Macs are the minority of PCs. So far, there have been no zero-day threats which require no user interaction to deliver the payload… so intentionally being educated on the threat and actively choosing not to do things that could expose your Mac to malware is and always will be the first line of defense, regardless of whether or not you install a third-party anti malware tool.
If you have family members who use your Mac and who have no OpSec awareness, or if you yourself are just not comfortable enough with your own knowledge about computers… you should probably have a reputable product installed. (I don’t know that I would necessarily call either Avast or AVG “reputable” though…)
why are you poluting your beautiful Mac with Avast or AVG!!! Completely unneeded and… terrible to boot
Don’t install either dude rubbish trash garbage
Uninstall Avast. Then, each day wake up in the morning. Go to bed every night. And in between, do not install Avast on your computer.
Don’t install an antivirus and avoid dodgy websites.
I can personally vouch for MalwareBytes. Fast, simple, small, free. You don’t need anything more unless your hobbies include clicking every ad on every website then clicking download on whatever pops up.
If you look at the message you’ll realize that OP has not that ounce, so better go with something.
That’s a very outdated mindset. Especially for people who run into these kind of problems.
That’s because Mac change their shit regularly
macOS is safer than Windows not mainly because is less targeted by hackers. It’s safer thanks to Apple security features like Gatekeeper, but mostly because it’s a UNIX-Like Os. Power Users don’t really need an antivirus if they know how to play with powerful features like file permissions, user groups and more.
Also practically every single file downloaded from the internet is put in Apple quarantine, and only an admin user can allow to run or install it.
Also thanks to the way macOS snapshot and SIP are designed, no known virus can compromise the installed OS. You can generally solve by copying your files, deleting your User folder, and creating a fresh new user.
That said, Mac can and do have viruses, but usually anti-virus software doesn’t do much better then macOS itself to protect you from them. There is good antivirus software specifically designed for Macs that I personally advice, but they won’t protect you from security exploits like Pegasus, which use unknown vulnerabilities.
Just that corporate anti virus software works fundamentally different from the shit Avast sells you. That stuff works, avast doesn’t. The detection rate on consumer Antivirus is pitiful
Have you ever heard of XProtect?
Nah that’s doing too much
same, i use it on one machine that holds sensitive data, it comes from the Linux world, is propperly audited, it is not bloatware, it does not, as opposed to most AV solutions coming from the Win realm, open a shitton of security loopholes.
other than that, the best protection against virii is common sense, even if spam is at times getting becoming so well tailored that it is unsettling, most virii do not target macOs (even if that tends to change at the moment)
Some people just can’t resist the sketchy “download now” arrow button on websites. Not to mention installing them too.
Anti-virus software on Mac causes people who run into this kind of problem to run into this kind of problem.
I love the downvoting parade here, it’s like we’re in 2008 and everyone is liek MAC HAS NO VEEROOSES
