I’ve only just got the shield but apparently this was working before ver 9.0 but not now. I’m using the nordvpn app but having to manually go in and start it each time. Is there anyway to get it to launch on boot?
OpenVPN can help with that.
I use Express VPN, it has that option built in
I’ve got the option set in the nord app to autostart but it will not start on boot for some reason. I think it may be an android 11 issue that it preventing it.
Yes, so frustrating, mine doesnt auto start on startup either, even though I have it set up in vpn settings
ExpressVPN does this. Also per app split tunneling.
Thanks for the comments everyone. I decided to downgrade to shield experience 8 the other night as I was having problems with slow network transfers. Now everything works as it should. I’m running openvpn and it connects on boot each time
Look into your nord vpn app settings for something like ‘connectivity/auto connect’
As most people are saying your VPN “should” have this option built the software for sure , most VPN’s do . Also, the Nvidia shield had this option built in under systems preferences/networking/ VPN configurations. I had to do this before my shield finally died and wasn’t using a big name VPN, but made my own using open VPN & my own server.
Finally , there is a 3rd party apk that can help with this , I gotta be honest give me a bit to try and find the name of it in my files , I don’t remember the name……it’s a apk that worked on all fire stick or android OS/ fireOS that I got from XDA developers. I will find it , I am just not sure if I can post the name of it in this thread due to rules . I’m on it though and will start looking for that file to get the name of the apk , I don’t see why it wouldn’t work in the shield, till then good luck! I will touch back .

I just tested mine. Nordvpn does in fact auto connect on mine. (Android 11 Nvidia experience 9.0.2)
(Nord version 5.14.2 full version)
I turned the shield off normally (sleep). Worked
Did a reboot. Worked
Pulled power plug. Worked
Did you go into nord settings? Auto-connect
Turn on both “When using wifi”
“When using ethernet”?
Then click on “auto connect is set to” and choose where you want to be connected to.
I checked mine by setting US as my connection. Then opened IMDbTV app and played a movie. IMDbTV app will not work in my country. But it will work if I vpn to the US. Therefore I know my vpn is connected without opening nord.
I tried opening nord after checking and it makes it look like it is just connecting when it actually already is connected after a reboot.
Maybe this is what you are seeing?

Never mind I figured it out and downgraded the Shield Experience. Now VPN auto connects when I start a specific app/s.
