Lose internet connection when trying to use proton VPN

I am using Windows 11. As soon as I press quick connect, I lose internet connection and the interface is stuck in “assigning IP”.I checked the TCP/IPv4 properties, there is an assigned DNS but no IP.

I figured out the issue, at least for me. The ProtonVPN TUN is not releasing the IP which was set when the VPN connection was made. To regain my internet connection, I took the following steps.

  1. Open settings

  2. Select Network & Internet

  3. Select Advanced network settings

  4. Select More network adapter options

  5. Right click on ProtonVPN TUN and select Options

  6. Double click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)

  7. Enable the Obtain an IP address automatically as well as Obtain DNS server address automatically

  8. Click OK, then click OK to exit out

These steps restored my internet immediately

Was it showing Automatic (DHCP) in IP Assignment ?

Where did you check for the IP Assignment ?

Last 2 days I have had error “This site can’t be reached. DNS address could not be found” when trying to open ANY website. Using win10 desktop app.

What I tried and it didn’t help:
- restart ProtonVPN app
- reinstall ProtonVPN app
- use other browsers

What I tried and it did help:
- switch protocol from smart (wireguard) to OpenVPN (UDP or TCP)

Issue happens when using desktop app for win10 only. If I use mobile app and browsing on my smartphone on the same wifi network, it’s ok (smart protocol, wireguard).

Was your Issue fixed out ?

I made a small batch file which resets the network settings. This has fixed the issue each time.

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /renew

netsh winsock reset

netsh interface ipv4 reset

netsh interface ipv6 reset

I was able to fix the issue

My setup:

Windows 11 upgraded from 10

Ethernet network via USB-C hub

I created a Windows 11 Recovery USB

Reinstalled Windows 11

Installed ProtonVPN v1.24.1

Network no longer disconnects when using ProtonVPN nor after reboot.

I still can’t get it to connect on pc,

It was my firewall shutting down my internet connection each time I attempted to connect the protonvpn.
Although, that seems to be resolved with the downed internet.
I still can’t get the proton VPN to connect.

It works great on android with the app, so far

this works for TCP/UDP protocols but not wireguard for some reason.

Thanks man, the issue Still and this helped!

I just want to thank you, after days of not getting mine to work this solved it for me. THANK YOU!

thank you for helping this fixed my problem too

This was in the Network connections section of the control panel.
In the adapter settings, I can see my WiFi, Proton VPN TUN, proton VPN wireguard tunnel etc.

The TCP/IPv4 settings for wifi are set at obtain IP address and DNS server automatically.

In the wireguard tunnel, I get a preferred DNS address (but no alternate DNS) and although use the following IP address is selected, those boxes are blank.

Can you please make a bug report from within the app? Thank you very much.

It works fine. except when I try using wireguard.

Yes, I checked mine Right now. It is also blank for me. It is blank as ProtonVPN gives you a new IP Address every time you Connect.

If you have Auto Startup best way are, Quit the App and Restart or Search for Services in Start Menu.

It will open a Windows, check ProtonVPN Service, Right Click and choose Properties and Choose Start and Set it ot Automatic, if it shows as Automatic (Delayed) or Manual

Ok, I’ve sent report.Btw I had to turn off proton vpn connection to successfully send report within app.

EDIT (solved):
ProtonVPN support suggested me to disable network adapter “Proton VPN 1”. It fixed my issue. Maybe this comment would be useful for other win10 users.

Try using Smart Protocol, As of now, Smart Protocol uses WireGuard Default. So, See if it works.

If you have submitted a ticket, could you confirm your ticket number?

I tried restarting but had the same problem. Then I set my protocol as UDP. that seems to work. I checked the settings of the TAP adaptor. Both IP and DNS are set to obtain automatically.
