Was it worth it buying Mail Plus or Proton Unlimited for you? What upgrade did you guys do and why?
Unlimited is worth if you use at least 2 services, 3 would be great and worth.
In addition unlimited gives you SimpleLogin premium account - with your custom domain/subdomain
I am using unlimited because I am using Mail, VPN and Drive - with SimpleLogin as alias “manager”
Unlimited without question. I had for years all my passwords on Firefox, but they stopped syncing. I migrated all to ProtonPass, transferred all my mails from Gmail to ProtonMail, using ProtonVNP all the time, sync all important docs to ProtonDrive. And waiting hopefully for a ProtonPhotos feature/app. If you are low maintenance (low feature), Proton is for you.
Mail Plus.
Bridge was the main point for upgrade. But other features were a nice bonus (namely: ulimited labels/folders, custom domain, additional addresses/alias). Also, what I am getting on Proton Calendar with this subscription is good enough for me.
So, yeah, at this moment I’m happy with what I am getting. Only thing that I feel that is missing (in my particular use case) is being able to use Calendar directly on Thunderbird, as this application is my main way to interact with both email and calendars (not a fan of web apps, nor the Proton Desktop Client).
I upgrade from Unlimited to Family as my wife started to use the Proton Ecosystem more.
My daughter follows so it’s a cheaper option than three unlimited subscriptions.
Mail Plus and then I added Simplelogin premium subscription which then also gives you the equivalent of pass plus on top of the mail plus and works out cheaper than unlimited as long as you don’t want lots of storage or vpn.
Mail Plus for me. Unlimited is good if you want/need multiple things it comes with. I may move to it in the future when my PIA sub ends. That would open up the Proton VPN as a possibility, plus give me a bunch of drive storage to move away from Google. However, Proton is still not very feature rich for some of the things I do and may never be a fully viable option. Right now I use it primarily for a privacy focused email service and that’s about it. Zoho is still my main email since I’m grandfathered on the free plan and it is far more robust.
I was on mail plus for a long time and then upgraded to unlimited for the extra space in drive.
I like unlimited because it motivates you to take advantage of the full suite of privacy-focused services. For me, it was a gradual process of full Proton immersion, but now I’m fully immersed in the Proton ecosystem of trust. I use everything: Mail, VPN, Calendar, Passwords, Drive, and SimpleLogin. The Unlimited package is an incredible value when you reach total adoption.
Mail Plus is sufficient for most users. Why?
Quality VPN are for free elsewhere (NordVPN and Surfshark have 100% cashback programs every few weeks, so theyre effectively for free if you select a 0% VAT country during checkout)
Aliases / temp mails are free elsewhere (duck mail, addy.io)
15 GB storage should be enough for years of mail
1 custom domain should be sufficient if you’re not a power user
Bitwarden > Proton pass (although the alias integration is neat, can be done equally automatic and for free with Bitwarden + duck mail token)
So why pay $4,50 more each month for features that are free and equally good or even better elsewhere?
If you’re lazy and want the whole package + “it just works”, maybe then it is worth it for you
depends on individuals…seems mail plus better for me, had Unlimited but go to mail plus. VPN is big factor but since the speed max as my ISP so cutting it…thought of addy and having more custom domain which makes 3.
Unlimited is easily the best value if you use more than just mail. Even better if you can get a 2-year deal and subscribe when they’re doing a sale.
Had mail plus. Once they added photo sync was forced to upgrade to unlimited. ![]()
Unlimited, because I use Mail, Calendar, VPN, Drive and Simple Login
Neither. ProtonMail lacks features and capabilities I find essential to me in handling both personal and professional communications and scheduling. Features that have been on the Proton “wish list” for years without any indication of if or when they might be implemented. I’m hopeful this may soon change as Proton seems to be paying more attention to customer requests/complaints, but until it does, the only product I’m satisfied with enough to use enough to warrant a subscription is VPN.
Pass is getting close for me to consider, but not enough to sway me to Unlimited, and you can’t have more than one “ala carte” subscription.
I needed only the mail basics. support has not been helpful
Also neither.
I really want to move my 18GB of emails to proton but I’m not so sure that I will always be able to pay 120€/year for the unlimited, so… If Plus gave me about 30GB of email space I would certainly go for it!
Also, it would be really helpful if I could buy more than one subscriptions in one account. I don’t want to lose the 24€/2 years P.Pass deal I have, nor use multiple accounts.
Mail Plus… I used to be on Unlimited but I have no need to use VPN which I found a hassle to use. I do not think I need the Proton Pass AI/sentinel stuff. If I could sync my Apple stuff like iCloud+ I may have upgraded to utilize the Proton Drive more. The iCloud+ is so seamless its a no brainer for me to use over Proton Drive. I also have a Microsoft OneDrive I pay around $50 a year for so can’t justify any more expense. I have been using Proton email for years at this point however…early adopter.
unlimited now but i mainly got it for the simplelogin premium subscription. thinking it would be better (cheper) for me to downgrade to plus since i only use mail and have a separate simplelogin premium sub.
How does simple login work in unlimited? You have the domain configured exclusively in SL, nothing is configured in proton mail? Or is it integrated correctly and both can access domain configuration?
