New Firewalla user. I’ve connected everything up this way:
Modem → FWG → Eero Pro 6 → rest of Eero mesh via wifi. I’m running FWG in router mode and Eero is set to bridge mode.
When I was running just the Eero network (with Eero as the main router directly connected to the modem), my Internet speed was in the range of 350Mbps / 250Mbps. Since installing the FWG and running the Internet speed test from the Firewalla app, I’m only getting 100Mbps / 30Mbps.
The port speed shows 1Gbps. In any case, the issue I’m having is the speed between the Firewalla and the Internet.
If the Eero is downstream and it’s getting good speeds, then it’s probably just the speedtest on the FWG being inaccurate - likely because the server it is connecting to is struggling. I think you can manually choose a different server in the app - give that a go.
OK this is really weird. My Eero is downstream from the FWG but yet when I run the Speedtest from the Eero app, I’m getting 309/61 but when I test using the Firewalla, I’m getting 43/30.
Eero is wired into Firewalla port 1 but how can it get a faster download than Firewalla?
Yes I have looked through that article already. The problem I’m having is the WAN speed. I’m using the same cable to connect the FWG to the modem as I was using previously to connect my Eero to the modem. So it’s not a cable issue.
I’m using the Firewalla app to do the WAN speed test so it’s not testing the WiFi speed.
I have been using Eero for the last few years and I really like it. Very good performance and very reliable. I just wanted to add some more security hence I decided to put the FWG in front it.
Things do feel less stable and slower with FWG in place than without. There are two areas that I’m still monitoring:
Internet speed - in general, it feels slower than before. Websites take a few more seconds to load etc.
In the first 24 hours, I had the whole Eero network spontaneously go down twice and all the Eero devices rebooted themselves. This had never happened before at all.
I like Firewalla and the features that it has but I am hoping things settle down here with Eero. I don’t want to have to trade off security for network performance and stability.
Yeah, mine was the exact opposite. I’m paying for a gig, and was getting 940-950Mbs for about a month on my FWP test. Then one day it drops to 100Mbps for the download. I tested the internet speed on my eeros and it was still reading high 800-900 Mbps.so it seems like there was an issue between the FWP and my Xfinity router. Tried using the fixes of using different test servers and still wasn’t able to get my speed test right. Tried turning off and on smart queue and no fix either. With smart queue off it did raise my speed a bit to the high 150’s but wasn’t able to reproduce my old speed.
Yes I have. In the speed test results I posted above, I was selecting the same test server (Sonic.net) that I tested using Firewalla (via SSH) and separately using my laptop. The two tests were ran one after the other. You can see, for the same server, Firewalla seems to be getting a much slower speed.
