New Firewalla Gold user - setting up with Eero but getting really slow Internet speed

New Firewalla user. I’ve connected everything up this way:

Modem → FWG → Eero Pro 6 → rest of Eero mesh via wifi. I’m running FWG in router mode and Eero is set to bridge mode.

When I was running just the Eero network (with Eero as the main router directly connected to the modem), my Internet speed was in the range of 350Mbps / 250Mbps. Since installing the FWG and running the Internet speed test from the Firewalla app, I’m only getting 100Mbps / 30Mbps.

The port speed shows 1Gbps. In any case, the issue I’m having is the speed between the Firewalla and the Internet.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

If the Eero is downstream and it’s getting good speeds, then it’s probably just the speedtest on the FWG being inaccurate - likely because the server it is connecting to is struggling. I think you can manually choose a different server in the app - give that a go.

OK this is really weird. My Eero is downstream from the FWG but yet when I run the Speedtest from the Eero app, I’m getting 309/61 but when I test using the Firewalla, I’m getting 43/30.

Eero is wired into Firewalla port 1 but how can it get a faster download than Firewalla?

Make sure you don’t have smart queue enabled. That will slow you down a bit as it prioritizes your internet bandwidth.

See this article https://help.firewalla.com/hc/en-us/articles/360056875493-Speed-test-and-Speed-Optimization-on-Firewalla for help

I had all kinds of issues with eero and firewall. I ended up taking it out

Had the same issue with my eero and fwp. Paying for 1 gig service and was receiving 900’s with the eero but my speed had dropped way down in the firewalla app. Wasn’t able to fix the issue. Unfortunately returned my fwp and waiting for the fwg SE.heres my post. https://www.reddit.com/r/firewalla/comments/15ikatx/dl_speed_down/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=1

Exactly what I was getting at when I asked what his Eero speed test was reporting.

So testing using the same server:

Speedtest from Firewalla terminal:

Server: Sonic.net, Inc. - San Jose, CA (id = 17846)

Download: 46.45 Mbps (data used: 65.4 MB)

Upload: 37.42 Mbps (data used: 67.8 MB)

Packet Loss: 0.0%

Speedtest from laptop connected via wifi:

Download: 157 Mbps

Upload: 92Mbps

The two tests were run sequentially. Firewalla first and then laptop.

Thanks but I’m still in the process of setting things up so haven’t turned on any of the other advanced features eg Smart Queue, VPN, Family etc.

Unlikely to be smart queue, unless you are running cake

Yes I have looked through that article already. The problem I’m having is the WAN speed. I’m using the same cable to connect the FWG to the modem as I was using previously to connect my Eero to the modem. So it’s not a cable issue.

I’m using the Firewalla app to do the WAN speed test so it’s not testing the WiFi speed.

I have been using Eero for the last few years and I really like it. Very good performance and very reliable. I just wanted to add some more security hence I decided to put the FWG in front it.

Things do feel less stable and slower with FWG in place than without. There are two areas that I’m still monitoring:

  1. Internet speed - in general, it feels slower than before. Websites take a few more seconds to load etc.
  2. In the first 24 hours, I had the whole Eero network spontaneously go down twice and all the Eero devices rebooted themselves. This had never happened before at all.

I like Firewalla and the features that it has but I am hoping things settle down here with Eero. I don’t want to have to trade off security for network performance and stability.

The Internet speed coming from my FWG has been steadily improvement this past week. I have a 350Mbps service.

For the first few days after installing FWG, it would only measure the speed at around 50Mbps consistently and during different times of day.

Since then the measured speed seems to be steadily ticking up. The last two nights FWG Internet speed test was reporting 200Mbps.

Have you tried different servers for the Firewalla built in speedtest?

What speed is the eero app reporting right now?

try

  1. speedtest via a device that’s ethernet connected and see if it reach the speed you want. if it does, the issue is likely wifi or firewalla WAN test.
  2. then you can use the firewalla wifi test to test the LAN. if it is slow, then you have a wifi issue, if it is fast, firewalla WAN test issue.
  3. If your Speedtest is slow (from a ethernet device) and firewalla Speedtest is slow, you need change wires, reboot modem and/or contact your ISP

Yeah, mine was the exact opposite. I’m paying for a gig, and was getting 940-950Mbs for about a month on my FWP test. Then one day it drops to 100Mbps for the download. I tested the internet speed on my eeros and it was still reading high 800-900 Mbps.so it seems like there was an issue between the FWP and my Xfinity router. Tried using the fixes of using different test servers and still wasn’t able to get my speed test right. Tried turning off and on smart queue and no fix either. With smart queue off it did raise my speed a bit to the high 150’s but wasn’t able to reproduce my old speed.

Yes I have. In the speed test results I posted above, I was selecting the same test server (Sonic.net) that I tested using Firewalla (via SSH) and separately using my laptop. The two tests were ran one after the other. You can see, for the same server, Firewalla seems to be getting a much slower speed.

Weirdly Eero is reporting a faster download than Firewalla
