NordVPN renews your subscription even if the automatic renewal has been deactivated

Hi! I just came here to share my experience. I had deactivated in my profile the automatic billing a couple of weeks ago, but NordVPN does not seem to care. Yesterday I was billed 99$ for a 1-year subscription.
I asked for a refund of course, but just be careful about it.
This is in any case a shady practice.

I signed up with a disposable card so I assume if they tried charging me again when my subscription ends (just under 2 years away) it won’t work anyway because the card isn’t valid.

I hope anyway.

I recommend canceling auto-renew through email so that you have a record in case you get “accidentally” billed for it anyway.

For users who use Amazon pay do this: once you deactivate auto renewal within the app you must then go to your Amazon account and cancel your authorization for Amazon to make automatic payments to Nord.

Yeah I was disappointed with them for another reason. I have only been subscribed for a week. I plan on cancelling. I paid for their dedicated IP. I asked for a US based one. I chose Buffalo out of the choices I was given. Only problem was it kept coming up as a latin american IP address. When I would go to Hulu, it would tell me the service was only available inthe US. Delta airlines site always welcomed me to their latin american website. HBO MaX also took me to their latin american site. Beside those problems being annoying I use some sites that restrict access from US based IP addresses only. When I would research the IP address myself it I would find some sources that would say it was Buffalo NY, some would say Panama City Panama. After about a week of emailing back and forth, it was still the same thing.

Thanks for this post. I changed my card to one that expires before they can charge it, and did the many clicks to cancel auto-renew. I just don’t trust them.

After seeing your post, I checked my renewal status, too. I remember 100% that I disabled it once I subscribed but now it was enabled. Had to disable it again. It seems they have silently enabled it for users. A very cheeky tactic that could make me choose one of the competitors once my subscription expires.

Through PayPal, or your cc company?

Shady Nord. Support is useless.

Yep. They did it with me last year, I took a lot of care to ensure auto renewal was turned off.

Then about a month ago I received a notification that payment had declined. Luckily the card they had on file was my old card. It’s just so crazy that it could coincidentally happen again. And like last time, they would have told me I must have forgotten to turn it off.

They know with year payments most people won’t have the explicit memory of turning it off, or be on the lookout for the payment to come through.

Infuriating.

Same with me. Used a card which has now expired.

Disabling auto-renewal was my final straw with Nord. I’ve got almost a year left, but switched to Mullvad straight after cancelling auto-renewal.

Well they refunded me, that was not the issue.

Same. I use privacy . com and label the card as ”asshole companies". It’s a one time use with limit of $1 and put on pause. But MAKE SURE to remove any other payment methods because I had Amazon prime subscription with throwaway card as default renewal payment, but since the card didn’t go through it just renewed with other real credit card. I was kinda pissed but kinda expected Amazon to do that to me.

I know this is a very old comment but BEWARE. They do charge expired cards i just woke up this morning to a 100 dollar charge from nord on a card thats been a year + inactive (bank merger + it was well expired anyway) but i know nord likes to charge by the year so i figured id let you know anyway just incase.

Is Mullvad in a country that’s not part of the 13 eyes?

Dispute it?

PayPal has their own section for subscriptions, but they make it really hard to find.

Their mailing address is Sweden, which is part of the 14 eyes. However, they make it possible (encourage, even) to have anonymity. They collect zero personal identifying information and you can mail them cash to replenish the account, amongst other ways to pay them without linking it to your identity.
