Normal for a VPN to slow down internet speed A LOT?

I work from home with a fiber internet provider. With an ethernet cable I get about 900 mbps.

But when I connect to my company’s VPN, it slows to about 200 mbps and stays there. Is that normal, or should I let my IT people know about it? We use FortiClient VPN.

This is normal, you’re only as fast as the slowest link in the chain. It’s either just how fast their internet is or if it’s a large company they’re probably throttling you so you don’t use too much bandwidth, and there’s enough to go around. 200mbps should be plenty for most jobs.

You can ask the admin to enable split tunneling on the VPN. I am not sure if this can be enabled from the client, you can take a look.

Once enabled, only connection to the VPN will be limited to that speed. Anything you access that is outside of the VPN will use your own bandwidth and thus not limited to the VPN connection.

Totally normal for VPN.

What are consequences of this low speed? I was thing of buying one to watch Rugby

thanks
