openVPN in Egypt

I just moved to Egypt and have been trying to connect to openVPN to be able to access my working servers but I found out that Egypt has blocked openvpn is there any other way around it?

You can use Outline VPN to tunnel your network through this VPN and then connect to your VPN. it works with me perfect so far.

I know this is an older thread but most VPN protocols are blocked in Egypt because of their implementation of deep packet inspection. I haven’t been able to connect with Wireguard, IPSEC, L2TP, and “vanilla” openVPN.

I am able to connect using any openVPN configuration that uses TLS Crypt or Obfuscation. If you are able to setup your own server that uses TLS Crypt you will find it connects and is usable although not lightning fast. When configuring, I’d use TCP and use a random port although I think 443 works.

If you don’t need to reach a specific work server and just need to get a connection outside of Egypt, Witopia offers this configuration in their PRO package. You just need to choose OpenVPN with the “stealth 1” option enabled in their software which I think uses obfuscation and not TLS Crypt.

This is a very old thread but the differences in the TLS Crypt and obfuscation are discussed here:

Lastly, my last trip to Egypt was ~ 6 months ago so this may have changed since then.

  1. Move out of Egypt
  2. Try another tech (IPSEC, tailscale, wireguard, TOR, etc.)

Egypt block ALL VPNS as they are technically illegal. I had massive issue with this a few years ago when a client moved his call centre to Egypt. If you dig into it, VPNs are legal, the government will terminate all tunnels at random intervals so you cannot be assure even if you get something working that it will stay up for longer than 10mins let alone a few days.

I advised my client put up with it or move… no other choice.

Try OpenVPN with cloak? I personally haven’t been successful with amneziaVPN but maybe you will have better luck. Google amneziaVPN for more information.

I am in Egypt. Best thing I would say that could help you is to have a VPS and tunnel your OpenVPN through this VPN. That’s what I am doing with my production servers.

Did you find a solution?

The problem is i needed it for a work server
But the easiest option was to get the hell out of egypt lol :joy:

OK you cracked a smile for me with that first one.

They use DPI over all ports, afaik

I’ve been to Egypt a couple of weeks ago and I needed to connect back to my home country for uni. Although they’re very restrictive with VPN usage, I was able to get connected (HUGE thanks to help from my VPN provider). I pretty much always prefer using OpenVPN, but it looks like IKEv2 is more reliable nowadays. The solution linked helped with OpenVPN, but I still prefer IKE if I’m going abroad to a country like Egypt. Not saying using it going to be pretty, but at least it’s usable.

tried that, but no luck either

yes and no,
U have to tunnel ur connection through a VPN first, then U can use ur normal VPN configs, but I couldn’t find anything that is good enough to handle high-speed data transfers. so I am using anydesk to connect to a machine outside of egypt & running my vpn on that machine

Probably your best option! :joy:

So which one do u use for tunneling?

someone suggested outline VPN, but I haven’t tried it.

Did you tried and does it works?

for anyone wondering. i tried and its not working. i cant add server from outline server manager

did u find any solutions?
