Google announced their very own VPN and I’m curious how people feel about it. Would you use it?
Google has released its security whitepaper. It mentions that they can’t identify you after you connect. They’ve open sourced the client and “in the coming months we will be open sourcing the server side user authentication mechanism as well as providing the results of a third party audit, currently underway.”
This is yet their another non-profit open source projects out of 2000+ open source projects. Not to mention that Google is the 2nd largest contributor of open source and actively contributes to Linux kernel.
I don’t need that Google One plan, but I’d probably sign up if I could pay for a cheaper standalone version.
It’s funny ITT and on this topic to see so many people saying that the reason people use a vpn is to shield your information from Google.
People who use Android phones, who use Gmail, Google maps, Google photos… What information exactly are you trying to make sure they don’t get?
Look. If you have the 2tb plan and get this for free, and you’re concerned with people on the same network snooping on your browsing data, then it’s a no brainier, just use it. It’s also interesting that the people who are criticizing Google’s have also suggested free VPNs who are known to sell data.
It depends on what your goal is with using a vpn.
If they let me pirate the new season of Archer and download cracked cyberpunk, why tf not? VPN for me stands for Various Porn Networks. As long as google’s a good sport about the high seas, I got zero problems
I use it and LOVE it.
This topic shows why frankly most “savy” users in here are idiots.
You use a gigantic google tracking bug. This is the ANDROID subreddit. Serious people with opinions I take seriously who actually live in the real world might use this for:
-
Banking
-
Hotel WiFi
-
Protection from bad actors/states
If you are all about privacy then you are barking up the wrong tree.
I can’t stress this enough: Nothing is ironic about google releasing a VPN. Everyone who says this shows their true colors as either uninformed or just being a troll.
Of course not - the reason you use a VPN is to get away from people like Google.
Interesting I didn’t hear of this. I trust Google more than other VPN companies that advertise on YouTube, etc. The main reason those companies can offer free VPNs is because they sell your data.
Google will at least not sell it to others, they’ll just use it to serve ads at worst.
If you’re paying for Google One, it’s not a problem.
Nah, too many eggs in one basket.
Yes definitely. I trust google any day compared to any other third party with my data
Besides google have it’s whole body dipped in the pool. They are most incetivised to protect your data compared to some unknown third party.
I would never used Google if I had the choice
Sounds very suspicious. I prefer to use veepn
Foxes announced their very own henhouse and I’m curious how people feel about it.
ITT: People who have never taken a cybersecurity class
Nope. I’ll stick with my Panamanian brother NordVPN
So they can censor more voices? If there’s anything I’ve learnt following this election it is that big tech does not like free speech and hence I won’t put my data in their hands.
Trusting an ad company is extremely tough.
Before they are accessing your data without any cost, now you will have to pay them too.
