I rarely restart or shutdown my PC, and I do that for windows updates 90% of the time.
I’m saying this because I can’t remember how much time it took the older version of Proton to startup, but I’m sure it was at least 50% faster than the new one.
Even the app loading itself was smoother. Now it’s hard to see the app before it’s loaded, and if I managed to open it before, well:
Same with 2.0 on Windows 10, unistalling like described and reinstalling didn’t improve anything.
I know this is an old post, but I’m having the same issues. I have 4 machines here. There’s zero reason for a basic GUI to take 3 minutes to load.
It feels like it’s 2000 and I’m stuck on a Celeron 400 w/ a mechanical drive rattling my entire office…praying that Photoshop will load.
Reinstalling fixes nothing. I have virtual machines with various builds of Windows. Zero improvements.
Hi! Could you please first uninstall our software off your device, using the Programs and Features option found under the Control Panel?
Then navigate to Control Panel → Device manager → Network adapters → select TAP-ProtonVPN Windows Adapter V9 → right-click on it → Uninstall device → confirm Uninstallation.
Also, select ProtonVPN Tunnel adapter → right-click on it → Uninstall device → confirm Uninstallation. If there is no TAP-ProtonVPN or Proton VPN Tunnel entry, please proceed with the next step.
Afterward, open up the %LOCALAPPDATA% or C:\Users\Your_Username\AppData\Local and check if there is a Proton VPN folder found there. If yes, delete the Proton VPN folder.
You can then proceed to download and install the latest application version using this link: https://protonvpn.com/download/
If the issue still persists after reinstalling the app, please report it through the ‘Report an Issue’ option in the app menu, and if possible, please send us a screen recording of the behavior when you launch the app.
same on linux. it takes at least 4-5 minutes before the app opens. but after, the connect is really fast, at least.
I made this ticket long time ago, since then, the loading time has reduced a lot, at least for me on the same device.
Yes, it’s still relatively slow and it’s still not as fast as version 1, but it definitely improved a lot. And I no longer see the ugly screen, they made a way around it I guess by not showing any UI before loading all the libraries, and I think that’s why it feels slow.
You no longer see a splash screen because it’s loaded in the background, but when it’s loaded, it runs and starts right away.

It’s not a big deal, The app is working fine.
It’s just the loading phase of the app. If you want to reproduce the issue,
1- exit proton completely from the tray
2- open proton
Now nothing will appear, not in the tray or anywhere until the app is loaded completely, which is taking 2 - 3 mins on my PC (12GB Ram - i7 6th 2.5ghz - Using GPU Disabled).
3- To force opening the window in this time, lunch the app again.
4- The tray popup window will appear, click on Open Proton VPN.
and you will see the proton window look the same as the image in the post.
If I disable auto login, it pops right up. I think their login server is to blame. Could be wrong.
