ProtonVPN not working with Instagram?

I am using the USA servers but my primary location is still Argentina. VPN works with TikTok and everything else so idk what could be causing it not to work with Instagram. I already deleted old login info and new login info even says Florida so idk wtf am i doing wrong??

Regarding the wrong geolocation, the problem is, that often instead of using GeoIP services, social media companies with lots of big data (like facebook, instagram, and google) use location on cell devices to match IPs to locations. If there are a lot of people from country X connected to server Y, it can be that they start to match the location of the people to X, even though the server is in country Y.

You might need to:

  • disable geolocation in your Android mobile (GPS, etc.)
  • force-kill Instagram and clean cache
  • connect to Proton VPN server in the US
  • start Instagram

Hopefully Instagram should at that point start in a context that doesn’t leak any location beside the IP. It might be though that Instagram has simply learned that you are based full time in Argentina, for your specific account (not sure about that).

What do you mean with “not work with Instagram”?

If you’re using a mobile device that uses iOS that may be a problem.

But how would they know my location if i have location permissions blocked, along with my IP masked with proton?

Meaning it still shows me ads targeted towards my country (Argentina) and when I post stuff it only shows it to Spanish speaking people, despite being content in English

Nope, I’m using an Android phone

I use an iOS. Why is that a problem for geolocation on IG?

I’d also like my reels to be shown to people in USA

For which case in your example? Argentina or Florida?

Anyhow, Instagram has a lot of data and they map the geolocation of their users to IP‘s. If you then share the same IP, it is possible they will link your account to a wrong location

How long have you been using the VPN? It takes a while (Instagram specifically) for it to change you to the VPN location. For example, since the start of the Ukraine war many US servers were being counted as Russia because a lot of people over there were using the VPN. This went on for months and it was only in late July, early August that this changed back to US. And even then it was not immediate. The first change was showing US ads. It then took an extra week or two for it to change the layout of the app to the US (having the notifications up and shop in its place).

I’m from Argentina and i want to reach people from the US, thus why I’m trying to make my account seem like it’s from the US. But no matter what i do my primary location still shows as Argentina, meaning ProtonVPN is not working or im doing something else wrong

hmm, you might be right. I’ve been using it for months (for tiktok specifically) but just started doing all the necessary steps on instagram to delete stuff that was about my country (location stickers, posts with location on it, login activity) just yesterday. I’ll keep it on and just see what happens in the next few weeks

You can check whether proton vpn is working by checking https://ip.me before and after turning Proton VPN on.

Are you on Android or iOS?

And you are not using other stuff that may leak your true location? Like location service (GPS) or Bluetooth. Depending on your OS, check everything you should disable so the app can’t access this data.

Just checked that site and it’s definitely working, it just doesn’t work with Instagram specifically.

I’m on Android

The VPN works, something else leaks your location on the phone. I am not an Android user though, maybe /u/alex_herrero has an idea

Sure, but the part I’m missing is what exactly are you trying to mask. Users are users in Instagram.

With the implementation of reels, instagram has not only taken the format of the tiktok video into their platform, but they’ve also implemented the whole way the reels get shown to people. How do they get shown to people? well, in tiktok they consider the location in your ip and the location of your sim card. So if you have an argentinian IP and an argentinian sim card, your content will be shown to argentinian people first, then other spanish speaking countries, and finally people who speak other languages, but this last one will ONLY happen if your video becomes viral. If you do content in english, it’s almost impossible to get that first buzz of people if your entire audience speaks only spanish, because the content is not targeted towards them. Instagram has implemented the exact same thing, except it doesn’t take into account your sim card. It takes into account your IP and your post activity (location stickers, posts with location on it, login activity). Thats why im trying to change it and mask my ip. Hope that answers your question

Oh, I see. TIL. I’d contact ProtonVPN support in order to see how they’re dealing with this, and if they have any experience with it. Being something new, I honestly don’t know how to best deal with this requirement. It’s probably trial and error, unless someone with more experience already did that and can enlighten us.
