ProtonVPN ripoff?

Okay so firstly, i got the impression that ProtonVPN was some moral just service.

Did some digging and found their trustpilot and google reviews and EVERYONE is shredding them there with legitimate concerns and problems. I think it’s 58% leaving 1 star scores, walls of text from engineers to software developers to normal joes.

Everyone is calling them a scam because you cant cancel auto-renewal as they stop your service and keep your money locked on as credits. They basically do this going off the statistic you’ll probably forget. But there are even more reviews about other concerning stuff.

But whats worse? The price, 170 for 2 years of basic VPN, 258 for unlimited for two years.
Thats pretty crazy for VPN pricing lets be honest.

ProtonVPN their speed benchmarks are worse than NordVPN on VPN Benchmark arregators even surfshark.

So what gives; why are people allowing this? Even their ‘sale’ is a ripoff; honestly I would love to know their profit margin to see how bad the greed is. Now I have to find an alternative platform due to the reviews I’ve read.

These are valid concerns. I wasn’t aware automatic renewal couldn’t be easily cancelled. I will have to look into this and decide if I want to switch to mullvad.

the proton vpn plus 2 year deal is 120€

That’s with the current discount, though, the standard price for the same deal is € 300:

  • 24 months + 6 free months, 50% discount, € 119,76
  • 30 months, regular price, € 299,7

To be honest, if you subscribe with the discount, you get charged the same amount every 30 months (24 + 6) for Proton VPN Plus.

This, however, doesn’t happly to Proton Unlimited, where you get charged full price (287,76 €) when the current 172,56 € deal expires after 24 months.

I do agree with Proton’s core values, and I know they obviously have expenses, but I still find the service too expensive. I can achieve nearly the same amount of privacy protections with a bit of extra work and much less money.

Cancel is as easy as a button click

When the current deal (172.56€) expires, users will be charged with 192€

Are you really going to compare Apple and Proton? Compare both, the privacy and company, then decide for yourself whether that really is a valid comparison. In my opinion, it most certainly isn‘t.

I personally go with a combination of iCloud Private Relay, iCloud Hide my Email, Cryptomator and 1Blocker or NextDNS.

Total cost is much less than any of Proton’s offerings.

There are valid alternatives for people not using Apple products, such as Fastmail and SimpleLogin (which, by the way, is owned by Proton) for email and aliases, and AdGuard for system-level content blocking.

You may cancel your account with a refund for any unused portion of the service period within 30 days of the initial purchase. Here, any unused portion of the service period refers to the prorated remaining full days of the subscription period. Refunds or credits beyond the 30 days window will be considered, but at the sole discretion of the Service. The Company is only obligated to refund in the original currency of payment and to the original payment method, refunds will be processed within 30 days of the request. To request a refund under our Money Back Guarantee, please contact us using our support form. This money back guarantee clause is only applicable to users who have subscribed to Proton VPN directly through the official Proton VPN or the official Proton Mail website (e.g. if you have subscribed to Proton VPN through the intermediary of a third-party processor, please refer to its respective refund policy).

It‘s ridiculous to even start comparing both companies. Comparing a 393$ billion revenue, 164‘000 employees company to a swiss company with 400 people. Sorry but that cannot be said otherwise.

Jacking prices up is also incorrect. There hasn‘t been a price increase for existing customers. When the rebrand happened, existing customers got grandfathered into the most similar plans with the existing costs they had.

I don‘t know where you are getting your incorrect information from.

Where did I give a google vpn comparison? I am not giving a google vpn comparison, I don’t know what you talk about. I pulled apple‘s information and the numbers above are Apple compared to Proton, as you mentioned Apple in your comment.

They didn‘t increase prices for existing customers, I don‘t know where you pull your wrong information from.

I am out of this thread, as it doesn’t lead anywhere. This is just ranting, wrong info and comparing apple and pears, or comparing providers with a difference of night and day
