Question about pricing

Hi all, I’m considering trying ProtonVPN but the pricing is not 100% clear to me. I’m currently on a 1-month trial, and basically while the plans say “Pricing: €9.99/month, or €59.88 for one year (€4.99/month), or €107.76 for two years (€4.49/month)”, but if I go to my dashboard and try to extend my VPN for a full year, it does cost €59.88 for one year, but then it says it will be extended automatically in 12 months and will charge me … €79.95 (and if I go for the two-year option it’s €107.76 but then it still says it’ll be €79.95 per year afterwards). That’s about €6.66 per month which is a price per month I haven’t seen anywhere. Is the 1-year or 2-year deal a one-time thing per account?

Thanks.

but if I go to my dashboard and try to extend my VPN for a full year

What plan do you currently have?

Is the 1-year or 2-year deal a one-time thing per account?

It’s not a one-time thing. Generally speaking, the 1-yr and 2-yr subscriptions will be cheaper than the monthly price for that plan, even on renewal. What you might be seeing is an introductory promo price for Proton VPN, that may result in a cheaper first subscription.

VPN Plus (one month, not renewing automatically).

Thank you for your response. This makes sense if I’m seeing the introductory promo price, but in that case it doesn’t appear to show the price after the promo (the €79.95 per year I mentioned in the post) anywhere that I can find. Also, on the page to extend the subscription for two years, it does say “Your subscription will automatically renew in 24 months. You’ll then be billed every 12 months at 79.95€.”, so then it bills yearly (after the initial two years), not giving you the 2-year deal?

Old post, but if the $5/month is an introductory promotion price, what is the actual price? Your website states that the price when purchasing for a year is $5/month.

Indeed, the 24-month plan now renews every 12 months after the initial 24 months have passed.

The yearly price is discounted off the monthly price, which is actually $9.99, with the caveat that you pay the whole year upfront.

Alright, that somewhat clears it up then. So my intention is to try a few different VPNs before settling on one, I started with ProtonVPN and I’m very satisfied with the speeds and how to set it up (I’m just using openvpn in the command line, not the Proton app, but it works perfectly for my use case), and the possibility of going for Proton Unlimited in the future is also nice, but I still can’t help but feel like the pricing is confusing. In fact I don’t think I could find anywhere how much it would cost per 12 months after the initial 24 months.

Yes, but what is the per month cost of ProtonVPN if you get the yearly price? Your website suggests it would be $5/month, whereas you have stated this is just an introductory price.

Thanks, we’ll pass along the feedback to the team.

You can see the renewal price at the checkout page, after you click on ‘Get 1-year plan’ (at the bottom of the page).

To get back to this, I was looking at the pricing again and I did find the following: on Pricing | Proton VPN, for 24 months of Proton Unlimited it says “Billed at €191.76 for the first 24 months”, whereas on Create a free email account or choose a paid plan | Proton for 24 months of Proton Unlimited it says “Billed at €191.76 every 24 months”, so one of these is worded to make it sound like the price changes after the first 24 months while the other isn’t. This seems more concrete than my previous “it feels confusing” comments
