Questions about buying a VPN router for Mullvad

Hey, I’m planning to buy a router and use Mullvad on it to be able to have a second VPN network I can connect to with my Apple TV, if I need it.

What I’m not clear on is how necessary it is to flash a router with custom software, or if I can just buy a router with a VPN interface like Asus or TP-Link and connect it to Mullvad, LAN from my usual router and voila, VPN Wlan?

Get a Gl.iNet router. It supports Mullvad natively out of the box.

The Flint 2 is my go to VPN router for home use.

FYI: Mullvad is not about freeing services from streaming restrictions. If that is your goal with your Apple TV, then you will be sorely disappointed. Many streaming services block Mullvad IPs, and, therefore, will not work on your Apple TV behind a Mullvad VPN.

You can do either. Personally I just bought a router that didn’t need to be flashed. Just make sure it has enough RAM to handle your VPN at full bandwidth. And one that supports the uploading if WireGuard configs as that is quicker.

I use TP-link Archer AX55 which has Wireguard VPN support and enough processing power to support decent speeds over vpn.

Question within your question - why Are people securing their client devices (Plex playback device/apple tv) behind VPNs as well? As far as I know it can’t be proven your watching an illegally obtained stream? Generally curious

Ah, yes, thanks, I’m aware. I oversimplified it a bit, it’s more about all devices being in the same network so I can send stuff between mobile, TV and Laptop, which isn’t possible if you use a VPN client on each device.

It’s not RAM what matters but CPU performance.

Alright, thanks a lot. I was confused because of all the flashing tutorials.

It really depends on your technical ability and/or willingness to learn. I did it the hard way for years. Now I just prefer to spend my time in other ways.
