Should i use a VPS , or a VPN?

hi reddit . i hope someone on here might be able to help me

i live in london uk, i bet in play ( as the race is being run ) on horse racing using a program called Gruss Betting Assistant which allows users to place bets into the http://betfair.com betting exchange with one click of the mouse , and i use the http://betfair.com website to watch the race live using their streaming service called betfair live video .

it streams the content to users with under 1 second of a delay from live . speed is very important when watching the race as any delay in pictures will give other players an advantage over me as they will see things before i do which would leave me at a disadvantage.

i will be living in thailand for a few months soon and i would like to be able to continue to do this , but betfair will block me as gambling is not allowed in thailand .

so i was advised that the best and quickest way to get around this would be to set up my home router as a VPN , so that when i am in thailand all data from the betfair exchange website will come through my home router in the UK and then on to me in thailand , and also when i want to place a bet from my thailand computer my data will go from my thailand computer through my home uk router and then onto http://betfair.com, so it looks like i am at home placing bets , and not in thailand . i also need to receive the live video pictures in as quick a way as possible and for my bet to be placed as quick as possible .

but i have also been advised that a VPS would be better and quicker, where by i can install gruss betting software onto the VPS , and the VPS to be based in london . then i just need to log into the VPS and speed should be reasonable. a extra latency of 0.5 second of what i receive in london would be workable , but 1 -2 seconds would make things very difficult for me.

would you know which would be the better option for me ?

i would also like to have no lag when moving the mouse when using the betting software

sorry about the long write up . i would really appreciate any advice you may have. thanks very much

You should test both setups (both VPS and VPN) before going to Thailand. It is very common for streaming sites to block IP addresses belonging to cloud providers (VPS). If that’s the case, then your only option is to use VPN from your home router (which has a residential IP address, which are typically not blocked by streaming services).

Regarding latency, ping from SEA to UK can be as high as 200ms, and even more if you’re using a mobile connection. There is no way around this AFAIK. Remote desktop will be laggy.

I mean a vpn or a vps is still going to give a significant delay that would most likely be noticeable but in terms of what is most likely more responsive and quicker I would personally say a VPN because it will also depend on your routers latency and then say the vpns latency but it will most likely be the best in terms of response or if possible pick the closest vpn server to Thailand which allows gambling.

The reality is the TTL is going to be in the 100’s of ms and you won’t get near as good response from half way around the world. Better off betting on the local MMA in Thailand

thanks red . would using nord vpn with a dedicated ip be better to reduce the risk of them blocking me . i did use a vpn there about 3 years ago , everyday for 3-4 weeks and didn’t have a problem. but i was using wifi, ipad, etc so had a terrible set up and the pics were about 8 seconds behind the market

thanks . sorry for the late reply , i thought they blocked my thread.

Latency not TTL, but otherwise, good assessment.

No the ping from a to b is different from the round trip completed request that is required.
