Significant Bandwidth Limitations?

I am testing nordvpn for a month long trial. But when i enable it on my router my connection speed drops significantly. Without VPN I’m around 100 mbps download. When I enable the VPN it drops to around 20. Is there a way to reduce the loss? Is this just the nature of the beast? It would make sense to lose some bandwidth as that’s the nature of VPN tunneling.

If you’re using OpenVPN, switch to WireGuard. But Nord doesn’t support WireGuard on the router. So maybe get a more powerful router (one that supports AES-NI).

Is there talk of WireGuard router support? I’m fine with using the computer app for now.

Can I tunnel without encryption?

This is correct - unless it’s a specially designed (and very expensive) dedicated router box (or unless your router is a full PC/server that you’ve set up), a consumer-grade router is almost certainly not going to be powerful enough to handle en/decryption for your internet traffic, especially high-bandwidth streaming or large file transfers. Run your VPN per device (this is also good for mobile devices that will switch networks).

Awesome. Thank you a ton for this information! Exactly what I was looking for.
