Teleport issues with hotel WiFi

I’m having an issues with connecting to my VPN server at home with UniFi teleport(UDMP). My work computer using fortinet vpn has no issues so I kind of don’t think it’s the hotel network blocking the vpn. The speeds here are typically in the 25mbs range. Sometimes I even I have to close and reopen the WiFiman app on my phone a couple of times for it to even see I’m connected to the internet. I can reach pretty much anything else with no issues. Once WiFiman finally sees I can connect, I’ll initiate the connection and then it will time out. Then I try again and it connects. Not sure what else to do. I have this issue mainly on WiFi, I actually found working Ethernet port and my personal computer seemed to connect ok to teleport the one time I’ve tried. But all three devices (phone, iPad, windows laptop) have issues with WiFi.

Hotels normally limit outbound traffic, allowing a few standard ports like HTTP and HTTPS (TCP 80/433). So an SSL VPN like FortiVPN is going to connect just fine.

Unifi VPN is Wireguard/IPSEC based which uses non standard ports that a lot of public Wi-Fi’s don’t allow.

I’m still patiently waiting here for Unifi to have SSL VPN…

Trash panda hotel internet probably free and unless you want quality internet they expect you to pay

I started having minor issues with Teleport and stopped using it. Before I stopped using it, there were days where it could connect instantly and days where it would take forever and seemed slow. So I disabled it and use Identity instead. I believe it is the same VPN protocol (WireGuard), could be wrong. Since Identity is free, actually has a dedicated app for iOS, Windows, etc… (not using WiFiman). I set it up and now have zero issues when connecting remotely to home. I don’t know what caused the slowness, it always used to work really good up until about 3 weeks ago. I don’t know if it’s the WiFiman app, or what.

Since you have a UDMP, you should be able to do the same. In your control panel, if you click on Admins & Users, there is an Identity Settings tab.

Ok I had a feeling it was something like this,

Well I travel a lot for work so I’m highest status with Hilton so the “premium” internet is free to me

Identity when connected shows up as teleport on the UniFi app - yet I can connect from anywhere quicker than I can remove my finger from tapping on the connect button!

Going through teleport can take what feels like over a minute. Always has for me.

I did they said “according to the error message, the connection request timed out. Please try again on a stable internet connection”.
