So I have been using Nord VPN on my phone since over a year now, but ever since the last couple of updates the Tesla app does not connect to my car when VPN is on. If I pause vpn then voila, it connects immediately to the car.
Anyone using a vpn on their phone experiencing connectivity issues?
Same for me with another popular VPN
I did find a workaround by switching the protocol from the default NordLynx to OpenVpn and so far it’s been working fine.
Hmm I use nordvpn and haven’t had any issues on version 4.29.5-2203-63741548ea of the Tesla app
Doesn’t like Private Internet Access either, nor does it like to have data funneled through AdGuard DNS / VPN.
Since you use NordVPN, if you have an Android phone, use split tunneling so the rest of your internet traffic is protected by the vpn and the Tesla app bypasses the vpn.
I don’t know if this works with the Tesla app as I don’t own a Tesla but been browsing this subreddit deciding on whether to get one. But I do use nordvpn and that is what split tunneling is used for. Disables the vpn for selected apps.
I would understand streaming services wanting to block connecting from a VPN. But I really hope Tesla is not doing it with their app.
Thanks. Yep, I’ve got the same version of the Tesla App. I’ll probably try a different server in Nord VPN and see if that helps
Yeah I found out a couple of days ago that it doesn’t like PIA. Took me a minute to figure out why I couldn’t preheat my car.
May be I’ll try Adguard next once my Nord subscription runs out. Will also be checking out Express VPN. It’s critical we are able to preheat the car in winter.
Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately split tunneling is not an option for the iOS app. Hopefully they’ll add it in the future.
That sounds crazy. What protocol are you using? From what I’ve read, traffic to their servers is encrypted unless you’re using L2TP/IPsec, which I think is not even an option.
Is your sniffer tool able to verify traffic is unencrypted with NordLynx or OpenVPN?
Np. Server I’m on if this helps: United States #9864
Yeah, thankfully, on Android, I use the Adguard VPN in conjunction with the Adguard DNS app. This allows me to have certain apps bypass Adguard services entirely. So the Tesla app works just fine this way.
NP.
Highly doubt it. IIRC it is iOS that doesn’t allow split tunneling at least on the consumer end. Your iOS device would need to be in a managed environment before split tunneling is available.
