I’m unqualified to answer that, which is why I replied only to the parent assertion about how Tor can be accessed. Tor (it’s not ‘TOR’ btw) typically aims to obscure the destination of your traffic through geographically distributed onion routing, but it is not primarily designed to hide that someone is using Tor. In an environment where using Tor at all is forbidden, an adversary doesn’t need to trace the entire circuit and reveal what a user is doing; they only need to demonstrate that a person is using an illegal VPN to bring them under further scrutiny or legal trouble.
Yes, that’s exactly what I meant - you’d need to get credentials for an obs4 bridge or similar either before entering China, or over another proxy service like a VPN, in order to use Tor within their network
very easy to detect the tunnels. the GFW just blocks it because of DPI (Deep Packet Inspection).

i used a vpn everyday for three years in china. it was one of the us cut-out companies too. idk why everyone in this sub thinks vpns are illegal.
VPN’s are absolutely illegal but they tend not to enforce it unless they want to since the majority of the population does not have one. Talking about VPN’s a lot on wechat is not advised and people have been arrested before (mostly locals… and I know of a case specifically). Don’t be fooled that just because you used it all of the time doesn’t mean it isn’t illegal.

VPNs are not illegal in China, no matter how often western disinformation repeats this lie. I sympathize with people who have been mislead by this propaganda, since it has been made nearly impossible to find substantive information including actual legal language of the laws themselves using the english language search tools offered by western companies. This should tell you something. Julian Assange has been writing about the US State Department and NSA coordinating and coopting companies like google for decades if you’re interested in learning more about that.
