TorGuard is Dying - A VPN on The Way Out

I observe Reddit every day—normally, I don’t get involved, but when I see TorGuard shills berating other VPN companies and picking on individuals, especially after what they did to me as a long-standing affiliate, I can’t just sit back and watch. This is coming from a company that has historically been one of the most toxic VPNs on the Reddit scene. Everyone knows them, in one way or another, for being a shilly company with hordes of spam accounts. They were heavily active in the “VPN Comparison” sub that was recently suspended and blocked.

I advertised TorGuard across several high-ranking sites I own, and initially, everything was great—I grew with the company, and the aff program paid well. However, sometime in 2020/2021, my payments started arriving later each month. I was repeatedly told the payment was coming, that it was just delayed, or that the affiliate manager was on holiday. Then, out of nowhere, they informed me they no longer accepted crypto as a payment method and required a bank account instead. I provided my business bank details, but then spent four weeks chasing an answer. In total, I spent 12 weeks chasing a payment of over $8k, only to be told my account was “under review.” Image attached:

After numerous emails, support tickets, and even calling them out on their forums, I was blocked, my account was locked, and I haven’t received a single response since then. I still haven’t received my money, and they continue to profit from the 2,000 to 4,000 users I referred. The situation impacted my income so much that I had to start working in a local store.

When I started digging, I realized I wasn’t the only one. See below for others they’ve treated the same way, all documented on their forums:

Recently, they did the same thing to Tom Spark, a guy who reviewed them often and was one of their biggest affiliates for years:

If you search Twitter, you’ll find users asking about their affiliate payments and wondering why they aren’t getting responses. Many are seeing the “Account in review” excuse, which basically means you won’t be paid, or they don’t have the funds to pay you.

And it’s not just affiliates—they’ve also started sacking staff. The former CTO was dismissed. Jason Hawk, who is autistic and had just moved into a new home, was suddenly sacked. https://imgur.com/a/EVJRPKg

What does this tell us? It indicates that the company is in financial trouble and is slowly dying. The traffic graph below for TorGuard shows that their numbers have dropped to pre-2014 levels—10 years ago. I found this in a thread:https://imgur.com/a/SJbRJck

They barely ever update their apps—some haven’t been updated for years. When they do, it’s usually just to change text or fix a bug, with no new features added. The forums are completely dead; no one really posts there anymore—maybe once every 2-3 weeks.

When you ask support about these things, they are often rude, short and curt or just don’t respond at all.

It’s clear this company is on a downward trajectory, and it’s not surprising, given how poorly it’s run. The next WeVPN is on the horizon. I remember WeVPN told me everything was fine, and then they closed shop 4 weeks later.

They accuse others of being dishonest, but according to this forum post, they’re selling “Dedicated IPs” to multiple users, which aren’t actually dedicated: https://imgur.com/a/xpwNO51

If you look at the TorGuard subreddit, it’s full of toxic nonsense. They write articles criticizing other VPNs, use dupe accounts to attack others on here when they really should be taking a closer look at themselves.

Every other VPN I have had are professional and courteous unlike this poorly run company.

It’s a shame to see this happen. For $5/mo, or $30/yr, this VPN showed promise. Told my friends and family about it, and it was the talk of the town. Eventually I moved onto another provider, especially since they didn’t offer streaming support out of the box without paying more, whereas if you went with team blue or red, you’d at least get streaming support at the same price you would be paying them anyways. I did like that TG had support for port forwarding, a necessary feature when sailing the seas for the purposes of seeding.

Even so, I still told people that “it was a good general purpose VPN”, but the moment they screwed people like Tom over, was the moment when I told others to boycott the company, and whether that was a result of me saying that or just a coincidence, it really does appear that it’s working.

I’m in the same boat. I started with them nearly ten years ago and signed up when folks from work were asking me which VPN I used.

I’ve been asking for a payout for a couple months and no answer. I assumed it was an isolated case. Learning that it’s not, it’s time for me to bail.

I’m wondering, how this post is not removed yet. This is a new account created today. Tho, I do feel bad for the OP. No affiliate should be treated this way.

It’s so sad but everything you say is true. That is why I am just letting my two year contract finish up and I plan to not renew. I already have an SPN which is far more superior to any VPN and I’m very very happy with the results. I still use TorGuard for my mobile devices but other than that it’s really just the back up.

I urge all of you to really move from VPN‘s to SPN’ S. There are several amazing videos on YouTube explaining the difference and I can tell you categorically that I am not being paid by the company. I have nothing to do with them whatsoever. I am a private individual who is very concerned about privacy and honestly just did the research and subjectively have Realized that all things being equal: an SPN that only is the closest guarantee to absolute privacy for the average individual, but it is also the way of the future. I urge all of you to look into it and think about it. Take care and have a wonderful day.

Yeah Torguard sucks, worked well for like 2 weeks. I lose 800mbps on my upload, windows and android app is garbage. Also latency is horrible I’ve tried 15 different MTU settings, different ports and protocols… support is little to no help.

New account you sure you’re not that bitter Tom Sparks by any chance?

So you referred people to a years long known bad vpn and now try to take the moral high ground lol.

I bet you also run fake vpn review sites which simply rank by affiliate.

You made money off deceiving people into buying their products when there are many better alternatives out there, just to make some money. You can’t really take the moral high ground or act like you are owed anything, you are an internet parasite.

Are there better, similarly priced alternatives? I’ve been paying $30/year (or rather, $15/6 months) for torguard for years now, though I don’t use it often. I just toggle it on when I need it.
I hadn’t heard about any of this til today.

Wake up. It’s tom spark.

Tom got screwed by Torguard. Let’s not hate on him.

No i don’t take the moral high ground, I’m simply sharing my experience, it wasn’t always like this, this decline started from 2020 on wards in my view when my payments started being delayed longer each month, I always thought it was a great service but it’s changed drastically since then. And for your information, i don’t run review sites, i have large communities.

When I used it, it wasn’t half bad. The fact that they hardly updated their apps or added new features was one of their downfalls.

Even more reasons for him to do this.

He’s literally an stubborn ex that doesn’t let go.

This man literally posted the same comment which started with exactly the same wording to me and another guy in this thread, he’s literally a scam affiliate bot.
