After years of service, Stealth.256bit.AES.ovpn just got silently removed from the Torguard VPN package
It was the only ovpn config used by the majority, as it provided reliable encryption:
cipher AES-256-CBC
Other .ovpn config files lack any form of encryption in the .ovpn file, thus making it default cardboard-security level(128bit).
This is pure and utter bullshit, as their blog clearly reads that they use “state of the art security AES-256 bit”
http://torguard.net/blog/how-does-vpn-work/
After a couple of inquiries Torguard stated that we have to live with it, and that using OPENVPN with the highest security standard is not an option anymore. Instead of using audited and well-established OS software, we need to use their proprietary program called Torguard LITE. Torguard had the audacity to even state that “you dont need this much encryption nor is there a justification for 256-BIT encryption”. Followed by marketing terms such as “heavy duty obfuscation” to ease the blow. Obfuscation =/= encryption.
TorGuard is kill
Any other Torguard users here willing to confirm these findings? This change was made a very short while ago.
EDIT:
Issue has been resolved. T’was a migration after all.
This Stealth AES256 option was removed in our Viscosity VPN client only temporarily while we migrate all servers over to AES256. If you uninstall/re-install Viscosity you should see a new AES256 folder under OpenVPN listing all connection options. If you still wish to use the old server, contact our support desk and they will supply you with a custom config: http://torguard.net/submitticket.php
TorGuard LITE runs a patched version of OpenVPN to access our Stealth VPN servers. Otherwise, you can use any OpenVPN client to access the standard AES256 OpenVPN servers.
128-bit AES is hardly “cardboard security.” It’s extremely strong. Much more likely eavesdropping attack methods are exploiting software flaws, compromising clients and servers with trojans, guessing weak passwords, and social engineering to hijack accounts.
lol your very wrong, they are moving to offering multiple ciphers AES 128 and AES 256!!
You should really ask staff first before you go jumping to conclusions!
I asked staff myself when i seen it was removed.
They currently offer AES 256Bit in Au and Calgary and more locations are coming - they are working on backend to offer these multiple ciphers.
Do you have a screenshot or something to substantiate your claims?
Do i need to ? see TG official reply below.
I guess not, but you should consider editing your post to indicate that you were wrong.
I was wrong ? what was wrong exactly - everything i said is TRUE ?
AU and Calgary are already on AES 256Bit as we speak…
They are offering in all locations soon…
Both claims are correct!
Except the changes are, allegedly, only temporary.
What changes are temporary ? can’t you see what im saying through those rose tinted glasses…
They are all changing permanently… no one said this was temporary!
They “temporary” removed one profile as there was no need for it since its being offered on all servers, get what im saying ?
