Tutorial to bypass YouTube ads using vpn and firewalls

A week or so ago I made a thread asking if anyone figured out how to bypass YouTube ads using vpn with their firewalla.

A few of you did but I’m still struggling to get it done. Would any of you mind just doing a quick tutorial of what you did if it works?

Thank you!

I’m gonna do it whenever I have free time but here is the quick gist (some one chime in if I’m wrong):

  • First is to create a VPN profile using your VPN provider (idk the correct word) to export using a server from Tajikistan (this country does not play YouTube ads)
  • add the VPN profile to your Firewalla as a server
  • Add all the YouTube domains to route via your new vpn server. The way I do it is clicking the domain, then the “route” button, then selecting your vpn server. The easiest way to do this is probably to create a list using the desktop web app and assigning that list to the route
  1. From a computer browser (so not the app) create target list with YouTube domains domain-list-community/data/youtube at master · v2fly/domain-list-community · GitHub - I used this list and appended a *. to every one of these using a text editor. (e.g. *.youtube.com)

  2. Add and turn on a VPN client profile for a country where YouTube does not serve ads. I used an Albania Wiregard server from my VPN provider.

  3. Create and activate a route for the target list to route to the VPN profile you just activated.

  4. Enjoy no ads.

Not the answer you’re after. But Brave browser doesn’t show YouTube ads.

Create an account with controld and redirect YouTube traffic Albania
I haven’t seen one AD in about 2 months using this method

I’d be interested in this as well. I didn’t see that thread.

Is the VPN cheaper than premium or just a fun project?

Anyone experiencing the new pause/spinning out at 59 seconds issue? This happens on browsers only.

The key thing is step #1 …. Your vpn provider MUST also provide dns services on that country where YouTube is not monetized …. Otherwise this will not work. For example let’s say you get an Tajikistan ip but the dns servers (provided by the vpn provider) are in lets say Amsterdam… this will not work…

worked for me using an alabanian mullvad server. thanks

Are you able to provide a list of domains you have in your routing rule please?
Every time I try to create this routing list ads still get through and the only way I can stop ads 100% is route all traffic for specific device over the vpn but this cause other site complications

Which vpn provider are you using?

Thanks it’s working good. Do you have any issues with other streaming apps since you are setting a weird location with the vpn?

why doesn’t @u/firewalla use this list for YouTube block?

Do you mind copying your list here? Thank you!

Did this and still have random ads at the start of clips

Brave also doesn’t always play nicely with YT’s video controls unless the brave shield is down.

Doing it too super easy and works great.

I think youtube premium is $23 USD and most VPN’s are like $3 USD a month

Correct! I use ProtonVPN and this has it, can’t speak for other providers
