I have a DD-WRT and it has the option to host a openVPN server. I was just wondering how safe it would be to use my work? I want to be able to safely check my email or back account if I’m on the wifi, so if I use my own OpenVPN would it be safe to do so? How slow would it be?
OpenVPN is safe as long as it is configured properly.
There are various hardening guides out there, but keep in mind that it also depends on how well you have secured the machine running an OpenVPN server.
Check out GitHub - StreisandEffect/streisand: Streisand sets up a new server running your choice of WireGuard, OpenConnect, OpenSSH, OpenVPN, Shadowsocks, sslh, Stunnel, or a Tor bridge. It also generates custom instructions for all of these services. At the end of the run you are given an HTML file with instructions that can be shared with friends, family members, and fellow activists. for an automated way to set up a full suite of VPNs on a server.
oh shoot is it really? Well I’m still trying to figure out how to do it exactly but its cool to hear its possibly more safe than buying a service which I was considering. I hope the speed is good enough to use remote play on my ps4. During graveyard there is so much down time some of us just play on our laptops.
Yes, it’s safe because thousands of people do it
Fewer people still than Windows! Which is super super secure! just like Word, Excel, Adobe Reader and Flash! /s
disable LZO
What is the rationale behind that? It may leak that you’re using a VPN, but isn’t that the only info it gives? (https://witch.valdikss.org.ru)
Hi, I’m trying to do the math on that one claim there, but why is compression/LZO compression a dangerous thing?
^(Sorry, I see this is a 5month old post)
While OpenVPN is not affected directly, CRIME and BREACH have shown that compression can result in information leakage via chosen plaintext attacks.
