Does anyone know how much the data would cost if we took the Verizon SIM and used it in China? Are there any unlimited data plans for international travel? (not just North America)
Also, I wonder if anyone here knows if it’s possible for get through the Great Firewall in China using a Verizon SIM. I heard as long as the carrier is US based then the traffic will be tunneled to the US gateway similar to a VPN.
If you roam anywhere internationally with Verizon, they will always tunnel your traffic back to the states. Gets annoying sometimes bc it degrades the speed, but it works. I’ve heard of this bypassing the firewall as well.
China is a travel pass country. So on most plans, it would be $10 a day. Verizon also has Unlimited Ultimate which includes free travel pass for unlimited days (it’s technically like no more than 60 I believe though) and that would include unlimited everything just like you get in the U.S. and it’s not that much more expensive than any of their unlimited plans. The only downside is that you don’t have “unlimited high speed data”, your data will be throttled down to 2G after 10GB/mo. But, looking at the China coverage maps, 99% of the coverage they offer is already 2G. If you don’t want to be throttled down to 2G (if you’re lucky to be in a place that has 4G in China, it exists but not expansively) then you can do their international plan which is $100/mo but it only includes 250 minutes/mo.
And yes…I said 2G lol. So don’t expect significant working data. lol. It looks like some of their major cities have it, but surprisingly, it looks like China hardly has any cell coverage at all. And what they do have is centered around major cities, with a lot of it being 2G.
How long are you going? I would suggest you use the $10 a day travelpass which will also bypass the firewall when in cellular data.
For when on wi-fi you can use a VPN. For example Epxess VPN (there are lots.) I don’t know if Warp 1.1.1.1 works to bypass the firewall but it’s worn a short.
You could just upgrade to unlimited ultimate but if you’re going for long enough you’ll run out of your 10GB of data. You can get an secondary eSIM for extra data with VPN Price is Kong Dollar but that that’s like $50.
So is the trip is less than like 10 days, I would just do TravelPass $10 per day. Longer there is the $100 monthly travel plan. Or switch to unlimited ultimate and supplement with a second eSIM.
I have unlimited ultimate and get more data on an esim if I need it but I usually go to places where esim data is super cheap (like $15 for 50GB in Vietnam, and that’s tourists prices.)
There is LTE an 5G all over China on the top 3 major carriers. I haven’t been since 2019 when I had an LTE phone and fast LTE everywhere I went. If I recall correctly Verizon would roam on China Telecom which has the largest coverage area.
Verizon must not have agreements to use that network then. I looked at the Verizon international coverage map and you do not get access to any 5G. It’s mostly 2G.
