Using VPN with torrenting

Hey guys, new to Unraid but got a lot figured out.

One thing I’m having trouble with is using VPN with downloading.

I bought a sub for Mullvad and read a few guides but it isn’t clicking for me.

Would someone give me a bullet point list of how to torrent using the VPN (with no IP leak)? I don’t need detailed instruction (unless you want to!) but rather just a summary like 1) Subscribe to a VPN, 2) Configure your torrent docker with…

That kinda thing.

Thanks so much!

I used Binhex Qbittorent VPN with Mullvad VPN. Works wonderfully.

This link below wasn’t perfect, but gave me enough info to brute force my way through the setup. I am not smart enough to help you if you have questions though. I hoep this helps!

I’ve just taken the move from torrent to usenet. No vpn needed so you get your full bandwidth on downloads! Been an absolute game changer!

Mullvad very recently made it so they will not forward ports anymore. This breaks torrent functionality. So, if you set it up, but nothing is downloading/uploading, its because Mullvad changed the terms of the deal.

You’ll need another VPN provider.

Probably the easiest way: get a torrent client docker that supports vpn, like binhex qbittorrent vpn.

If you want it really easy, you should use a private internet access account, since binhex supports the port opening for that. But any openvpn and wireguard (have not tried this myself) should work.

Pick the correct provider, type, enter credentials, and provide the ovpn files if needed.

Follow Basic-Setup - TRaSH Guides to configure qbit and Redirecting... for general info on the arr stack and clients on unraid.

I use all binhex. Jackett, lidarr, sonarr, and radarr all going through delugevpn. Spaceinvader one is a lifesaver. Use his videos, it will help a lot.

Mulvad no longer supports port forwarding :frowning:

Afaik they were being pressured by law/CW enforcement to stop facilitating full P2P capability.

Just followed the guide and it connected.
Only thing is now I can’t get my Jellyseer setup to send torrents to binex-qbitorrentvpn but I guess that’s a different issue.

Thanks!

Are you serious? Good thing I only paid for 1 month ha.

I got it all set up but now having a issue where I select something with Jellyseer and it actually goes into radarr/sonarr but the torrents won’t go into binhex-qbitorrentvpn…

Thank you!

I should have said how I thought it worked was I needed a VPN client docker to actually connect and stay connected to the VPN and then you go into your torrent docker’s UI and select the vNIC that the VPN client created.

Awesome and thanks. :>

Really, really.

See here for more info, and lots of people complaining:

Well, that is an option, probably a better one, but harder to setup.

The good thing is, you can route other containers through the qbit one, instead of setting up a vpn only container and route everything, including qbit, through that, so it’s not a waste of time.

The downside is, you are stuck to binhex qbit (unless you redo things later).

Just got AirVPN so thanks!

By the way, do I have to do anything to enable port forwarding with my AirVPN / binhex-qbitorrentvpn setup?

Typically qbittorrent opens ports using upnp, so as long as that is turned on in your router settings (it probably is), then it should work.

I can’t comment on AirVPN.
