Very low speed downloading work network resources via VPN

It very much feels like throttling.

I have connected to Spectrum few months ago. All good with download and upload speeds 300/10, I’m ok with that. Now with working remotely - I experience extremely low speed for downloading resources from my work network via VPN. Like 25 Kbips low. Very frustrating and needles to say - impossible.

Now for my cell - I got att. Tried Hotspotting it from my phone to the laptop - all perfect. Tried to hotspot spectrum from my phone to the laptop - also all good. So I just decided to stic with this crutch and let it be.

Until today (maybe yesterday) I found being throttled from hotspot as well. Real bummer.

Now - the reason why the hotspot thingy was working in the first place, I believe was service Spectrum Mobile Access Point, which is creating a dedicated network for guests to connect (but need to prove).

Support is being support - “All good on our end”.

The questions are:

  1. Did anyone experienced anything similar?
  2. May it actually be throttling and if so - will replacing router with mine help?
  3. Did I missing out something obvious?

Thanks!

It’s your VPN. Spectrum doesn’t throttle. They could care less if you use a vpn or not.

Also on a company vpn - I have great speeds and outlook, everything has trouble - surfing internet is not an issue unless company logins required . Not sure what to do :smiling_face_with_tear:

Resolved.

If anyone will run into a similar problem - it was about a crappy router I was provided when signed up. Bought a new one (pretty basic one) and all the problems went away. Mind - I have changed only the router, not the modem.

And in my opinion - they are able to filter and throttle your traffic. And I really feel that it is done with the default router. But I may be wrong and it is just a really bad one under the hood, but that would not explain why all the entertainment and streaming stuff doesn’t suffer.

  1. Yes.
  2. No.
  3. Yes, it’s your VPN.

Plot twist: it was not my VPN

Well - try custom equipment. In my case - custom Wi-Fi router made the trick

Crying right now - not my issue . I’m told I need to port assign and I am not technically capable or it didn’t work when I tried and here to figure out wtf to do

Hey, thanks for the response.
Could you please elaborate a little bit? Cause I am the user with this problem and the helpdesk is struggling with figuring out the reason for the problem.
If you experienced this and were able to identify the problem - your experience will be a great help. Thanks!

In the end - it was not the VPN, it was the router

Oh, I have figured that out, but there was a slight chance that I will have a response from a fellow user. Thank you

My head is spinning trying to figure out the connection between T-Mobile and Spectrum here, and this really threw me for a loop:

Tried to hotspot spectrum from my phone to the laptop - also all good.

Any time you use a VPN it will reduce your speeds - greatly in some cases.

I use a VPN whenever I am mobile (5G) so that I can access my home network. Also, it lets me enjoy the benefits of the security measures and ad-blocking I have employed on my home network while I am mobile.

I also subscribe to a commercial VPN which I use whenever I am on public WiFi. Both reduce connection speed, but do not hinder my activities in any noticeable way.

In the past, I had to use a company VPN for work but that is no longer the case.

I have a full unlimited 5G plan, so I have no data caps and have no issues.

If you are seeing actual throttling on a mobile hotspot connection, it could be due to hitting a data cap.

Glad you got it sorted. As I stated in a previous comment, I think it was a config issue in the router of course a faulty unit is certainly possible.

I am not a fan of their new routers but I’m stuck with them at the sites I support for work. We used to only have modems only but with their new topology, you need to use their router to have a static IP. We’ve had issues where their routers stop passing certain types of traffic. The connection is still “up” and our firewall still can"see the internet" so to speak, so traffic doesn’t get routed to the other connection (provided by another ISP).

Oh, I have no problems with the speed while hotspoting 5G, it works great. Only an issue when the laptop is connected directly to the router. And only for internal resources which I access by VPN

I was informed I need a static IP but having to do it myself and I have no way to know if I did it correctly- can you help me?

Oh, it was not one faulty unit. In the beginning I have tried at least 5 different ones. Each one of them was provided by spectrum. That misled me into thinking that it was a problem on my side.

So you are saying the VPN is fine through the 5G hotspot? If so, the only thing I can think of is a config issue with the router. As has already been said, Spectrum isn’t throttling your VPN.

Do you have a separate modem and router or is it a combo unit?

Is it their router our your own?

Interesting, sounds like it’s an issue with how they configure that particular model.

I have the spectrums modem and router (separated). At this point I have a strong feeling, that replacement of the router for another model (bought by myself) will do the trick. Just want to confirm it before buying a new one.

I will make a wild guess and assume, that this is the way to limit torrenting. But it is just a guess.
