VPN blocking my Roku device?

So I just got a Roku, I tried setting it up and it will connect to my Wireless connection but it fails to connect to my LAN. Why is this? Is it because I’m using a VPN that sets my IP as somewhere on the other side of the world or something? Is there any way to bypass this or would I have to basically turn my VPN off in order to use this?

Depends on your VPN, provider, and where you are running the client. Most VPN configs allow unmodified local traffic

Thanks! I sorted it in the end, my issue now is trying to get my Roku to recognise that my server is set to a US one so I can access US Netflix… my Roku somehow recognises my homeland location even with my VPN and network lock on.

Roku uses your DNS, and Google’s pub DNS address to determine your location. So you need to restrict access to Google’s 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 DNS address’s in your router (via static routes), and then also force your location via inputting your desired dns address in your router. You can find DNS address via opendns, or via a paid service like unblockus / unlocator etc How to Bypass Forced DNS on Roku - Unlocator Support

Care to share a solution for your problem?

Thanks for this! Tech speak goes over my head but I’ll give it a go. Will changing my routers DNS address affect other people in my house when using their laptops and such? I mean, I can access US Netflix on my laptop so its not a huge issue that I can’t on my Roku, just would be nice to be able to watch that on a TV screen.

Hi! Sorry, basically on your Roku you have to do this really weird thing on your remote, almost like putting a cheat in. Press the home button 5 times, then press fast forward, play, rewind, play and fast forward. It should take you to a secret settings screen, disable network pings and you should then be able to connect easily.

Yeah I think doing it via this method will make all devices look like they are from where your DNS server is from so all devices on the network will change unless you specify otherwise for that device. You can set your DNS to be auto via dhcp for any device possible or manual via each devices network interface settings.

Also on PCs, there is a new app called smartflix which opens up the whole netflix catalog to you no matter where you are. It’s free whilst in beta. Check it out if you use a computer for netflix a lot.
