I am on vacation in a neighboring state and I tried to log on last night from our rental’s wifi when I got a notification that I couldn’t participate due to a VPN or proxy. I’m guessing it’s just due to the IP address being so different than what I typically use. Has anyone had experience with this message? I’m very concerned this will lead to a ban even though I wasn’t using a VPN or proxy.
Are you sure the rentals wifi is not behind a vpn/proxy. Many are, same with hotels, coffee shops etc.
You might be able to figure it out by going to https://whatismyipaddress.com
It should show the location in the same city you are in. Unless it’s mobile data. Those can be WAY off of your actual location.
I suppose it might be? It didn’t occur to me since most of the homes are owned by older folks with pretty low tech throughout the house. I’m just hoping I don’t get the boot over a 0.15 study. I have something like 6k approved submissions and no rejections.
I think you’re right, it’s not dramatic but my location is about 40 miles away. Hopefully it was just a warning message, it would be awful to be banned for a complete accident.
on the couple of occassions we rented our cabin, both times the rental company (different companies) reccomended to get a vpn and gave us details of a local company that could help with it if we needed advice etc. It seems a standard thing when renting.
Not to mention in my local high street there are two general shops, a bakers, a cafe, a coffee shop and a library that offer free wifi. All vpn’ed
40 miles isn’t that far depending on your location and how accessable internet is in that area. Mine shows about 20-25 miles but also identifies my ISP and not something unknown.
