Does anyone use a VPN? Which one works best in South Africa and is it even worth it? I live on a farm outside of Cape Town and the internet speed is not the best.
Pro tip: set your VPN location to Moldova and say goodbye to YouTube ads. Moldova legally stopped YouTube from putting adverts of its platform.
Why do you think that you need a VPN at all?
If you have a VPN, generally speed gets reduced, not increased.
For example, if you’re using your VPN to connect to something in the United States, the request has to go from your machine, to the server in the states, then back to your machine.
I would just look into a new ISP.
A VNP can never increase speed. It encrypts data and routes it through another server. Both actions ADD time between your computer and whatever server you want to connect to.
If your speed is bad the issue is likely your line or your ISP. A VPN won’t help.
Vpn is usually used for protection, not to increase speed (it usually slows your connection)
A Vpn makes it look as if your computer is in a different location than it actually is. That means you can get past region locking (for example, you can see shows that are only available to people in a certain country by the Vpn making it look as if your computer is in that country)
It can also make it more difficult for hackers to get access to your information or your computer.
So if speed is the problem, you might want to investigate which ISP (Internet Service Provider) to use
I also live on a farm far from town. Try Cloudflare warp vpn. It’s free and they have a server in Cape Town. Sometimes it helps for my packet loss and ping, but it doesn’t really affect bandwidth speed
I use McAfee VPN (and anti virus), it works well. Not noticed any difference in speed.
Why do you think a VPN will increase your speed? Unless you have a Wi-Fi backhaul and the WISP is throttling you.
I use mullvad. Won’t increase your speeds unless you have a fair usage policy.
Mullvad’s roughly R100 a month (and month to month)
You doing the Lord’s work
Someone recommended it for increased speed, but I’m not sure if it will make a difference.
Ofcourse it can… If your ISP is throttling you, you can get increased speeds by VPN with everything going over 443.
Nobody admits they use McAfee. Just saying.
The equivalent in the real world would be, telling everyone you’re a peeping tom or attracted to kids.
Impossible. Can only add latency.
No, it definitely will not impact your speed positively unless you are trying to do something like mask torrent downloads on a connection that has a FUP. Rather use the money to get a faster connection, VPN a total waste.
Fair enough. Never considered an ISP throttling a specific destination IP on your account. I VPN can disguise that.
I stand corrected.
