I have a subscription to PIA (Private Internet Access) VPN, and I noticed they also have a static-IP upgrade.
I was wondering if anyone can recommend (or for that matter tell me if it will work) a router model that will work with PIA (Private Internet Access) and can port forward.
Also, it would be nice to have the ability to remote-in / tunnel into to the router remotely to get on that network to console into the miner.
Just picked up one of these. I don’t ha e the service you have but I’m going to try a different one for a few host I have that can’t get past relayed due to their isp not allow static ip’s. VPN device
Is your purpose to host a VPN server at home? If so, it’s not necessary that you have a static IP. As long as your ISP gives you a public IP address (may be dynamic), you can host a VPN server at home.
I’ve read that not all home routers have the ability to port forward, so to solve this problem, I was thinking of configuring a VPN on the wireless AP that tunnels through the isp router in which case I could port forward on that device.
But as I understand it be on the same network as the miner gives you the ability to log into it via web browser.
But I wasn’t sure if there any devices that would be a VPN server and a client at the same time?
What do you use the static IP and port forwarding for?
Static IP and port forwarding are means to a goal. If you can achieve your goal without them, there’s no reason to stick to them, right? For example, with DDNS, static IP would be unnecessary (thus saving you the cost of buying one).
I will be doing a multi-deployment in the future, and I want to have options when it is not possible to port-forward for a helium miner. I am looking for options. I consider this a possible option.
What do you do in this case, when you cannot port forward or have a static ip (cellular internet)?
You don’t have a public IP address with cellular Internet. VPN with static IP address will give you that. This might work (assuming that you established a VPN connection from the router to PIA):
Port forward from the VPN static IP address to your router
Run a VPN server on the router
From outside, make a VPN connection to VPN IP and forwarded port
