What do you guys think of Proton VPN?

Hey all - VPN n00b here. I’m just getting starting setting up a homelab and wanted to know how Proton stacks up to other VPNs in terms of features, or other alternative options - All thoughts welcome!

I’ve been using it for several years with no issue. Particularly like no DNS leaks and no logs. Very stable and reliable for me.

I don’t really care about the privacy stuff rather than connection speed. So in my experience, I used the free plan for six months with no issues, though speed is limited, it was faster than NordVPN premium for me.
Now I have the plus subscription and It is great.
Its features are excellent,
I just hate their new GUI, it crashes sometimes.

Very good and reliable, but there are a bunch of services that block any access from it, so it kinda sucks from that perspective. But that’s not ProtonVPN’s fault.

Main issue I have is that it tends to drop a connection out of a blue, in most cases in a middle of a high traffic (streaming, downloading large files, etc.). Plus, I keep having issues with AirPlay - it stops playback randomly when AirPlaying to Sonos speakers.

Definitely one of the better ones. No issues over here been using for about a year now. Besides what they mentioned minor issues such as airplay

I would say it’s excellent, the best VPN service I have used by a pretty wide margin.

However, I’m also paying for the premium tiers of it, never been a free user really. But with the massive deployments they have, the fact that many of their servers can handle gigabit or greater (tested myself), and things like easy to setup WireGuard profiles for download, I’d honestly give it like a 10/10.

Especially with those profiles, it’s so nice to have my one VPN client be WireGuard that I use for all my VPN connections, whether it be home, Proton, etc… Just a double click and whichever I want is running on a lightweight application.

I think it is ok, and I use the free version.

For me its one of the better but still a few issues. Especially streaming often doesnt work when youre connected to a streaming server. Netflix and Disney detect them as a VPN and block it.

Its great, with great apps and great and solid features.

Truth be told I haven’t encounter a situation where I need to use it often, but at a glance the app looks great. It’s even better after the recent redesign.

It’s great but development is slow. I am still waiting for the Linux app to catch up…

Very happy with ProtonVPN on Android, Windows and Linux.

I’m a plus sub and never had an issue with the windows or android app. They even knew to do maintenance on Mexican servers hours before the canelo fight

Whatever brand you pick, just be sure and habitually test for leaks. Better safe than sorry.

Was the fastest out of the 5 or 6 vpn I tried, previously with surfshark for 2 years which is still pretty good. Proton Android and definitely Android TV app needs to be a lot better with more features, seems most of the Android TV apps from various vpn are very basic (apart from Surfshark)

Free version used to be okay now it’s mostly garbage because all servers are usually full, drops a lot. (Exposing everything it’s supposed to block) which would be OK if kill switch was on but oftentimes now free proton won’t even connect at all so you have to turn kill switch off just to connect to the internet at all, without a vpn. And then i forget to turn kill back on. So its bullshit bc ive found myself leaking multiple times. Plus it’s super limited. So I say for free definitely go elsewhere.

However, the paid versions are great. Usually. I’m usually subscribed to proton vpn Plus for 4.99/month.
HOWEVER, MY PAYMENT JUST LAPSED AND NOW THEY ARE TRYING TO CHARGE ME 9.99/MONTH WHICH IS HOW MUCH UNKIMITED USED TO BE WHICH IS THE DEFINITE BEST OPTION IF YOIRE WILLING TO SPEND ON IT BUT NOW ITS LIKE 12 OR 15/MONTH just to get tor/vpn, secure core, and a few more servers… SO IDK. I’m not cheap but it’s more of the principle. Also, I like good values. With everything in life. I own brand name most things and buy 6 figure cars but I get great deals on them. Definitely don’t pay full price. And definitely can’t justify paying double for something I’ve been paying half for for years. So I’m stuck.

Anybody know if there’s a month to month code to get the price back to 4.99 plus tax?

Or another vpn that’s equally as good or better for 5 or 6 bucks per month on a month to month service plan? I’d subscribe for the year or two but I’m waiting to see about their SERIOUS privacy issues and government cooperation concerns that have occurred with people I know personally and that are posted all over the internet for many others.

To explain,

I have to mention that in recent months ProtonMail has fully cooperated with governmental agencies in multiple countries without putting up any fight. Which goes against everything they supposedly stood for. So my trust level is definitely down for them. Especially proton mail. Supposedly they addressed this somehow but still. For truly safe, encrypted email I would definitely go with another option. There are two that I’m strongly considering that have MUCH BETTER SECURITY/PRIVACY/SAFETY. That even if they cooperated the info wouldn’t be stored/ they’d have nothing to hand over.

So take that as you will. I’m looking for a better solution for both mail and vpn currently.

Except for the free plan now. Used to be reliable but now all servers are red except a couple yellow. So super slow, drops a lot, and oftentimes won’t connect. So lots of leaks when you have to turn kill switch off bc it won’t connect and you still wanna use the internet and then forget to turn it back on in instances when you especially need it. Been liking Plus but this month they wanna charge me double and I’m not willing to pay double.

Anybody know a vpn of equal or better quality/security//speed as Plus for $6 or less on a month to month plan?

Not willing to subscribe for the year or two discount when they recently had bad publicity for cooperating with numerous governmental agencies and going against everything they supposedly stood for (in proton mail.)

Are you using it on Windows, Linux, MacOs, Android, iOS…?
