What is a good (possibly free) VPN service?

I know this probably does not belong here, but I thought it might be interesting for some of you. In my experience those “best vpn service” lists you find online are mostly scam, which makes finding the really good ones hard. So, which service do you use and why?

Don’t bother with “free” VPN services. If you’re not paying for the product, you ARE the product.

Mullvad is a fantastic VPN provider, and very cheap.

If you are looking for an actual VPN I recommend privateinternetaccess.com. Not free, but really cheap. Added bonus: they accept bitcoin

If you have access to a remote *nix box I’d also check out the fantastic (and free) sshuttle: GitHub - apenwarr/sshuttle: Wrong project! You should head over to http://github.com/sshuttle/sshuttle

Good and free ain’t going together. Deal with it.

I like mullvad but that’s just me. Its simple and doesn’t cost a ton. IMO

EarthVPN

Servers in like 140 different countries. Fast. Very secure. Cheap. (Only about $3/mo, plus there is a Reddit Coupon Code, I believe)

I’d go with http://www.proxpn.com/

But it depends on what you are using the VPN for.
If you just want to watch US Netflix, then everything is fine as long as you don’t do anything ‘creative’ with it.

If you really need security for some ‘freedom-of-speech’ projects then you should do some real research.

Spotflux is free, not too sure of the quality though. Anyone have an opinion on this?

I know this is not exactly what you asked for, but you could check out DigitalOcean.

The prices are fair and you have control over your own box. Might be worthwhile to check them out. They have servers in Amsterdam, San Franciso and some place else if i remember correctly.

  1. Look for free shell accounts

There are quite a few listed in this thread going on now: Free PC programs

I use BTGuard. They are very good about privacy.

I really enjoy 123systems.net. Extraordinarily cheap (10$/year at the lowest) and tons of 1 time payments that can make it into a fairly decent server, and very customizable. I use a 10$/year setup with a 256mb ram upgrade (12$ one-time) for my quick testing.

Depending on what you want to do there is a pretty interesting service that AOL offers in their AOL Desktop software. You can configure it to set up a VPN to one of their servers for free. I’m pretty sure it’s to act as a fast internet proxy for users who are stuck with dial up in rural areas. You probably wouldn’t want to do anything too sketchy on it and AOL is confirmed to be in bed with the NSA but just a tip that someone might find interesting. You can also get some great speeds on it for being free.

i am not suggesting a vpn just asking about one. I occasional use cyberghost, how secure is this?

I enjoy Private Internet Access. They’re relatively inexpensive ($39/yr), and have excellent speeds and boast no logging. They even accept Bitcoin, Paypal, etc.

Depending on what you are using it for riseup.net might fit your bill. They do require that you have referrals from two people or have some stated goal that fits in with their kind of radical politics.

Nvpn is the best in my book. They are probably the only VPN that truly doesn’t keep logs, and when they say it, they mean they don’t exist. Cyberghost and all the other vpns that claim not to, actually do. They will fork that shit over to the police without a second thought. Nvpn is different though. And it is only $6 a month!

Depends what you’re looking for. HotSpotShield is a really easy to use cross-platform and free option.
