What is HMA and is it legal? [META]

I want to access Netflix in Italy, but it is not available. I’ve heard of something called HMA that can help but doesn’t seem safe or legal. Is there a legal way to access Netflix? [ITALY]

HMA stands for “Hide My Ass” and its a VPN service. Im not sure of the laws where you live, but Ive never heard of VPNs being made illegal. All a VPN does is mask your true IP address and can make it look like you are located in another country.

Frankly, HMA isnt very good and you would probably be better off looking elsewhere. I like Kepard and Privat VPN, but there are hundreds of VPN providers to choose from, so you can choose one that suits you. All that being said though, you can achieve similar results much more easily with a browser plugin for Chrome called “Hola Better Internet”. Works the same way a VPN does, but you can configure it to only work with certain websites, rather than redirecting all your internet traffic through a VPN.

It’s not illegal, but any VPN is against terms of service if you use it to mask your location. If Netflix cared enough, they could terminate your subscription for it.

Could you not just change your DNS?

This is very simple and works on most platforms I believe.

Though I’ve only every done this with US and UK versions.

Im not sure what HMA is, but your best bet is a VPN. Just do a quick Google search and you will find out how to use it and how it works

Agreed, HMA isn’t a great VPN service. I personally use unblock-us because I run Netflix off my PS3, although if you’re only going to be running it off of your computer, you could easily go with Hola Unblocer (although I’ve heard a lot of malware talk regarding Hola recently)

I’m using an IPad mini, will Hola Better Internet work or other VPNs? Thanks for the helpful response.

It’s really only against the terms so the content owners don’t get all uppity about it.

It’s not free anymore though.

Really? I use Hola. Where did you hear the malware talk? Now I’m paranoid.

Im not honestly sure with iOS. It should be available for Safari, but I dont know if that applies to iOS, Mac OS or both. Hopefully somebody more knowledgeable than me on the subject can answer you.

Hola does not work for iOS.

For iOS you have 3 options:

http://unlocator.com - PAID, $4.95/mo + 7 day free trial. Works well, tutorials to get it to run on basically any device you own.

http://unlock-us.com - PAID, $5/month, works just as well as unlocator, has some solid tutorials as well, basically the same thing as the above but has a longer track record of being good.

A general VPN for whichever country you want to visit - Potentially Free or Paid. You can definitely find free VPNs for some of the larger countries out there, (http://justfreevpn.com offers Canada, US, and UK for free), but free VPNs are generally very very low bandwidth, meaning you will struggle to get any decent quality while streaming, they also tend you steal your information while using them, so don’t do any bank transfers with it active. Paid VPNs on the other hand will work about as well as the above 2 options, though they can range from cheaper to more expensive. Many paid VPNs can be found in the app store (you just need to pay attention to which countries they provide), and many others found on google,

Actually I might be wrong about the malware (I think I’m getting it confused with another chrome extension), but there was something going on with it that annoyed a lot of people (I have a feeling it was this.)

I believe Hola was purchased by an ad-serving company. I pay for Hola premium though and I run adblock, so if there are any ad popups, I havent seen any.

Oh, that might be what causes the random pop-ups on my windows computer. I thought it was possessed or something.

You still have those pop-ups? I thought Hola was just experimenting with those pop-ups and they received alot of negative feedback on it so they removed those. Atleast that’s what I’ve heard.

edit: Hola founder commenting on pop-ups
