What is the final verdict on NordVPN

I have heard conflicting reports about privacy concerns?

Use this website as a guide when choosing a good VPN:

In my experience Nord is decent, I have used it not too long ago and I liked it, but I found it a bit expensive so I dropped it.

Spin you own VPN server using a cloud host.

I would trust them over PIA, or anything based in a FiveEyes country.

Nord VPN isn’t the fastest. I’ve encountered saturated VPN servers quite frequently. However they seem to work fine for Torrent/streaming most of the time.

Do you have source on these Privacy concerns. I have not been able to located anything on this claim.

Can isp know what vpn youre using or do they just know youre on a vpn?

After reading the pros and cons in this review http://myvpnservice.com/blog/nordvpn-review/ I’ve decided to purchase it and now I’m quite satisfied with it.

Would you say their $90 for 3 years is worth it?

Complicated chart. How do I see which is the most secure?

Which do you think is a cheaper option ? I’m thinking to getting Proton VPN since im using their mails also, but it’s still expensive compared to Nord

That’s a dumb idea. As the cost of this is prohibitively expensive.

They can tell which VPN you’re using, but not what you do on the VPN (if encryption is strong enough)

Same!

$90 for 3 years is a great deal!

imo on current terms it is worth it- yes. but for me 3 yrs is too big of a lock up period. even if they stay as good as they’re rn, competition could improve or offer a better price. one year lock in is the maximum i feel okay with.

I use one which is a bit cheaper, but has actually better features, so overall I get more bang for my buck. But it’s still a decent VPN for newbies or average people.

Well I would not want to reveal my own methodology but here are some tips:

  • Is the jurisdiction a privacy friendly zone with no or small data retention policy?
  • Is the jurisdiction free-speech friendly
  • Is the judisdiction a part of a global spy network?
  • Is the VPN company trustworthy (research the owners, after you have narrowed down the list), any complaints?
  • Was the VPN tested throughout time? How old it is?
  • Does it have up to date encryption and security protocols?
  • Does it protect against DNS leaks?
  • Are the servers located in privacy friendly zones?

You get the idea. You would narrow it down to about 5-10 providers and then research each one, and their company background to make your final choice. This is what I did when I chose my own VPN.

On AWS? Costs me maybe 10 a month? And that’s not even an efficient setup, that’s using my “general” linux cloud machine

Learn about AWS (or Azure) and a product such as OpenVPN. Amazon even has the OpenVPN Access Server as an available VM template.

ya for the vm maybe. get back to me when you pay for the actual vpn traffic.

What’s the average price to set this all up?

Well I’d not reveal that.
