what’s a good free vpn for deep web usage
Never use a free VPN
None. If you don’t pay for the product in some way you are the product.
Don’t use a VPN unless there’s a specific reason why you need it (government will break down your door for using Tor, avoiding DMCA letters, getting around network firewall, wanting to use websites and services that block Tor exit nodes).
For some reading on why it doesn’t necessarily give you “more” privacy or security read this list of comments:
Also there’s no compelling reason to hide your Tor usage from your ISP, they can get the metadata of your encrypted packets to Tor or your VPN. If you’re sending packets to your VPN now two people (your ISP and your VPN provider) can analyze the metadata on your packets because it goes through two places. And usually those two places know who you are and your payment information. Yes it’s encrypted by either Tor or your VPN provider, but the main issue is the metadata can be used for timing or correlation attacks and now there’s two places where an attack could be done .
One advantage I can see is that if somebody somehow compromised the Tor system to track me down to my source (either my ISP or my VPN) I guess if a VPN honestly and truly does not log or snitch on their users then theoretically I would be safe, unless the adversary compromised the VPN provider themselves to get my identity anyways. But the thing that destroys this argument however, is that somebody capable of breaking the Tor system would be some kind of global adversary or powerful group that can analyze traffic and monitor networks. In that case, they would probably be able to connect you to your VPN as well or somehow compromise the VPN’s servers, ISP or employees. Thus I think the VPN would be futile anyways. Regardless, I trust the Tor system enough for the nodes not to log or snitch on me and I have faith in the Tor project to weed out evil nodes.
The whole point of Tor is to protect you from global adversaries:
Using Tor protects you against a common form of Internet surveillance known as “traffic analysis.” Traffic analysis can be used to infer who is talking to whom over a public network. Knowing the source and destination of your Internet traffic allows others to track your behavior and interests.
…
But there are also more powerful kinds of traffic analysis. Some attackers spy on multiple parts of the Internet and use sophisticated statistical techniques to track the communications patterns of many different organizations and individuals. Encryption does not help against these attackers, since it only hides the content of Internet traffic, not the headers.
…
Tor helps to reduce the risks of both simple and sophisticated traffic analysis by distributing your transactions over several places on the Internet, so no single point can link you to your destination.
So the main problem for me is that if you use the same VPN provider over and over and now your traffic is somehow predictable (you send packets to the same server repeatedly over time) I feel that it would make it easier for a global adversary to monitor that spot in the network, gather information and build a profile about you, then figure out how to use the timing of your packets or metadata of your packets (or details about your usage, behavioral patterns) to correlate traffic between the source and final destination. And eventually, be able to use this profile to reliably identify you over time.
The anonymity of Tor relies on the randomness and distribution of the data so not too much data is sent to any one point over time, and nobody knows where you’ll be going in or out of the system on any given day.
So in conclusion, unless you have a compelling reason to use a VPN, I would use TAILS + Tor until something better comes along.
edit: words
Why would you want a VPN for the deep Web. You need to understand the difference between the deep Web and dark web. The deep Web is the Internet lost beneath the surface Web, I.e Google, twitter, Amazon, Apple, eBay, Facebook and all the other big names that come up through the page rank algorithm used by Google. If you want to explore the deep Web use www.millionshort.com and automatically filter out the top 1 million search results, this is the Internet that is rarely viewed (hence the term deep Web). On the other hand if you want to browse the hidden/dark web use tor.
I recently got a VPN account, not for TOR, but for that sweet sweet blocked content from countries with better TV.
Tor Browser, Tails, Whonix (on Qubes OS).
If you’re simply using it to add a layer of “protection,” and not doing anything that would force the VPN provider to give up your info (such as CP), any VPN should do the job as long as that VPN is made by a 1/8 competant company that doesn’t turn around and log/sell your data.
You can use a bridge when logging onto TOR, obfs4, I believe is the one I use. This will, atleast what I’ve been told, hide tor it from your isp.
I’ve always used a paid vpn on the clearnet, expressvpn, for the feeling of having some extra security/privacy. I feel like I’m less likely to be hacked and have my crypto stolen while using a vpn vs not using one. Does anyone know if using a vpn to encrypt your crypto trading/usage keep you more protected?
I’ve heard both good and bad about vpns. Idk whether expressvpn actually does not keep logs like they say, they do run a .onion site and I haven’t read anything negative about them like I have about many of the other providers available.
You mean like tor through vpn?
thanks for all the info
Change your dns server to clouflare on your router. 1.1.1.1. then only use a paid vpn like express. Torgaurd is good if you use crypto. Then us whoinx in a vbox. All the vpn does is encrypt your traffic. Most everything you type in a search or on a site could be seen from the tor exit node without a vpn
Opinions on using the Tor tab in Brave?
Never Use a VPN- A VPN doesn’t do anything to help you with TOR unless you ca use a Tor exit node to connect to the VPN- VPNs by their nature log your IP, and thus do not contribute to your anonymity.
